Would you hide like this? |
|
Someone I know who is a pagan has a teenaged son who has started dating the daughter of Jehovah's Witnesses. There was a "meet the parents" kind of thing that was going to take place at the pagan household and the pagan decided to remove items from the living room that might raise questions: books and paraphernalia. Now, they don't live in the kind of place where persecution would happen (I understand keeping quiet if it could cause real trouble where you would have no support) so why hide just in case the other parents "get upset". Why should they get upset anyway? Surely they don't assume everyone is a Jehovah's Witness or even Christian? Would you hide stuff like this or just say "take it or leave it"? Do you think it will make things even more problematic later on if they find out - and find out that it was "covered up"?

2. dragon54u (4286) | 6 months ago | Maybe they didn't want their son's chances with the girl ruined or made difficult. That religion is very, very strict and feels it's their duty to stamp out evil--like pagans! But no, I wouldn't hide like that normally but if my lifestyle and beliefs would affect my son I might make some cosmetic adjustments. Maybe. Hard to say but definitely something to think about.

huswyf (918) | 6 months ago | I think it would be sensible not to be "in your face" about it but at the same time, having the discovery and discussion later might make it harder for both families. Imagine if the first inkling was at the wedding or something!

3. tinkerick (917) | 6 months ago | I think in this particular situation it is a wise thing to not have it blatantly displayed in the open. This allows the families to get to know each other as people without the harsh stereotyping or discrimination that would occur at first sight. We all know that once a person gets an idea in their head about someone, it's VERY hard to get past that brick wall. Eventually it will make itself known. And then all one can do is keep their fingers crossed. But maybe by then they'll like each other so much, they won't care.

4. mynameismine (558) | 6 months ago | I think they would be doing more harm that good by taking things down. If the kids are serious about each other and part of that relationship is hidden or lied about it can and probably will cause trouble down the road when the truth comes out and it will come out, probably at the worst possible time to cause the most pain and confusion.

5. Gargoyle0134 (1251) | 6 months ago | The whole truth and nothint but the truth. They would have to take me as is or not at all. If not, then if the girlfriend is a minor..the young man just has to accept that the relationshiop would not be allowed and not work and move on. Lying, even through omission, is never acceptable. SHE does not have to hide her faith or that of her family. -Neither should he have to. (His is as good as hers.-Period.)

8. spalladino (4875) | 6 months ago | Considering the vast difference in beliefs between the two groups of parents I think the pagan parents were very wise to make a few changes in order that this first meeting be a purely social one. By doing this the parents of the girl have the opportunity to get to know the*people* before they're forced to deal with the differences in their religious beliefs. It's not necessaryily covering anything up but helping to create a relaxed and non-confrontational atmosphere where four people can get to know each other.

9. TessWhite (1748) | 6 months ago | I am always reading, and often have books on Wicca lying around. Some of my favorite jewelry I wear almost daily is also Wiccan. I'm not going to go around and yell out to everyone my religious choice, but I am not ashamed of it either. And in my own home I an certainly not going to hide my beliefs. Why should we? Christians often have Bibles or crosses lying around. I don't find that offensive when I visit their home - because it is their home and their choice. But, I can understand somewhat why they chose to do this. Lets be honest here - we know that many Jehovah's Witness people like to be a bit pushy when it comes to their religion. And some aren't the least bit afraid to push even harder when it comes to finding someone else who has a totally different religion. I have a friend who is Wiccan. She unlike me likes to tell everyone and anyone that she is a witch. Thats her option. However, in being so public about it she has caused herself more problems. Various local churches come and stand in front of her home and pray for her soul. Religious material, candles and Bibles have been left on her property and door step. This as well as notes promising worse to come. Maybe this family just felt the need to be cautious in this first meeting with the other girl's family.

10. blackmantra_x (2266) | 6 months ago | good day.. I'd say take it or leave it. Being a pagan or a christian or a Muslim of a person shouldn't be the basis of his/her personality. I wouldn't hide from what I believe either. My significant other should accept it and his/her family as well. I remember the movie bird cage, it was a comedy but the situation is something like that but it concerns the gender preferences of the parents of the soon to be bridegroom.
