Do you salt your food while your cooking or on your plate? email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 98/100. CharRay7 (773)   ranked 65 out of 2,093 in eating food2 months ago

I usually salt the food on my plate because my hubby doesn't like alot of salt in his food and I do. lol I do maybe add a little while I'm cooking along with some pepper but that's about all the seasoning I ever add. I'm not supposed to have much salt at all because I have high blood pressure but sometimes I'm bad. sad
I do use Morton's Lite salt so that should help a little right?

What do you do?

I tend to salt food whilst cooking - hubby and I have the same taste in saltiness (if you know what I mean) - we do like a lot of salt but we're both over 40 and know that too much salt is bad for you so we limit how much salt we cook with and if necessary add a touch more whilst eating:)

My husband and I both use a lot of salt! I put a bit in whilst I'm cooking, but we both use a fair bit on our plates. And we keep a salt shaker in the glovebox of the car, because if we get fish'n'chips at the beach we like to add more than they give us in the shop!

I know how it is with salt. I have salt in the kitchen and salt at my desk, just in case I'm eating something there and it needs more salt..lol

Hi char;p
I do put salt not while cooking...here's a tip...
Why don't you try putting some salt when you are just finish slicing any meat.Rub the meat with some salt so that before you cook it..it will sink in to the meat.So while you are waiting for the food to be cook..you will know if you still need to add some salt or if the taste is just right.Be it a beef, pork, chicken or fish..I make sure that I rub some iodized salt and let it sink it for few minutes before I cook it.My boyfriend actually followed my style about it.And there's another tip for chicken.I know you observe also that there's some part of the chicken which is so slimy..you get salt and rub it to remove that slimy thing on the chicken...bec. that slimy thing on the chicken is giving an allergic reaction for those people who has asthma...like me..after removing that slimy thing with salt...wash the chicken so that it will not be salty though...It's just a filipino way of cooking or cleaning the chicken as well.Have a great evening char.;p

Thanks for your response and for those great tips. I never thought about rubbing the meat with salt before cooking. That's great and I'll have to try it. I also like your tip for the slimy chicken. Great post!!thumbup

Thank you so much my friend...I learned that through my great grandmother..Asthma actually runs in the family and we are actually allergic to a lot of food..So I seldom eat chicken.I only eat the wing part. But rubbing the chicken with rock salt...if you have it then please try it..then wash it after. We actually have a native language term for that slimy thing which I can't translate in english though. But it will work. And another thing for the fish...you can actually salt the inside of the fish so that when you eat it ... inside the fish meat...there's a flavor.I don't know if you also practise it in US.;p

I like salt too much like you. Probably our body needs the salt more because of more sweat. It gives high blood pressure and its bad really. But I can't help without salt.

I rarely salt when cooking and hardly ever on the plate either. If I'm using a stock cube or something like canned beans in a recipe there's usually salt in there and no need to add more. I find a lot of food that hasn't been home cooked to be overly salty and once you stop using so much yourself your really notice it when you eat outside the home (fast food is probably the worst, often the ONLY thing I can taste is salt which is why I rarely have any).
