How serious is a Hernia? | | I just found out a week ago that my six year old daughter has a hernia! The doctors have scheduled her for surgery on August sixth. Rught now she is complaining of stomache pains, which I have told her doctor about only to get the "that's normal reply." Which leads meto ask the question "How serious is a hernia?"

My son gave himself a herna when he was only a few months old, but it wasn't causing him any pain and closed on its own, so it didn't require any surgery. A hernia is just where an organ protrudes through a tear in a membrane. My son's was a little piece of an intestine, which made his little belly button an outie. His pediatrician said that they were pretty common in babies his age, so not to worry about it, and she was right. He got his from throwing fits. He had screamed for 4 hours straight at 3 or 4 months old, then lost his voice for two weeks and got that hernia. So they can be serious without treatment, but since she's getting it operated on, I wouldn't worry too much. Just keep her from straining too much right now. Blessed Be
