That's because documentaries about people who win the lottery and are very happy with the results don't put bums on seats, I'm afraid. Nor do documentaries about people who win but don't want the publicity, and nondisclosure of your details is almost always an option in these things.

Given the number of lotteries running worldwide, I think you could safely say at average of at least one person wins the jackpot every day, somewhere. They can't all be miserable.

I have a theory, would you like to hear it? Okay, the people that play the lottery are being exploited. The lottery exploits the poor and gives them a hope that if they could just win they would quit their job and everything would be super duper. They are unschooled on finances because anybody who knows numbers would never play the lottery. The odds are against you from the start, if you do win, there are taxes, nut job relatives and the fact that you are now popular and you have a lot of money. Celebrities or high profile people can afford security and don't mind paying for it. Those who fall into a jackpot don't even think about the consequences of winning, just that they want to win. If I ever played the lottery and won I would then buy a million dollars worth of tickets for the next lottery, the odds would be in my favor to win again, and I would keep doing it until I got bored, but since I'd rather not give my money away I don't.

I don't think it is a curse, it is irresponsibility from the people who were lotto winners.
They put them self to a fun that they can not take it, I mean they buy a sport car drive to fast and look at the bad luck they crash and get killed or they end in a wheelchair.
if you ask me that's not bad luck, that is madness that money is bringing to the people with little brain and much luck.
But it seems that if you want to win a lotto first think is to be as irresponsible as you can be, that is why you and me moony cant win a lotto:)

I watched this documentary. It was very depressing. The one about the guy losing his wife was really sad. I don't think a curse comes with winning the lottery. Money just changes people. As for the people who get in trouble because everyone begs them for money a firm no would have saved them a lot of trouble. If I was a millionare I wouldn't want a lot of people to know about it.

There one day with nothing and the next day with more money than you thought was possible. Although you remain anonymous the word gets around, relatives you did know you had start crawling out of the wood work, so called friends start wanting to see you and the endless cries of help come in the mail. With all these pressures it no wonder that things can start to go wrong.

I do not know the position with the state lotteries in the States but here in the UK, when someone wins the UK lottery, which is drawn every Wednesday and Saturday, the winner has the advantage of using the lotteries financial advisors on the best way of using your new found wealth. The biggest winner has been in the Euro lottery which is drawn every Friday. The person came from Ireland and won 75 million Euros (approx £50m or $100m) fancy landing that kind of money.

If the person is level headed enough they should be able to get over the problems and live the "life of riley". Investment is the key. After setting oneself up, invest the rest and live on the interest (tax paid of course).

With big wins on LOTTO, what should happen is LOTTO, have someone to help with the large amount of money these people have won.

Many have never had much in their life and now more than they can count in one sitting.

Sad to say many are foolish and also believe near everyone about their money.

I would have to agree with almost everyone else on here in that it's more them being irresponsible than horrible luck. People believe that even though they spent $3 million on a home and they won $5 million that $2 million isn't going to last them a lifetime with that home's taxes. Plus, they splurge on all the unnecessary materialistic items would could only dream of. If they were more responsible with their finances...say investing by using one of the best Advisors in the world, they would prosper.

People are not responsible when they win the Lottery. They need to think things through before spending money. they should also ask questions and hire an accountant to help them with the taxes and so forth. They also need to spend responsibly. If you plan on quitting your job, you must plan for the future.

If I won, there aren't many people that I would tell. I wouldn't sock it all away but I wouldn't squander it on meaningless things. I would try to do some good with it and help people but that would be done anonymously. The bad luck that can come after a big win is usually poor financial planning like gold plating your toilet seats or buying a different car for each day of the week.
