I miss getting dirty |
I really do miss getting dirty. I mean really dirty. I didn’t put a garden in this year and I’m so forlorned about it. I miss getting my hands dirty, the weeding, the hoeing and replanting. I miss putting my garden up. Canning tomatoes and potatoes as much as I miss freezing onions and pea. I miss those fresh creamed turnips and garden salads. Corn on the cob and sweet potatoes. Radishes and squash. To me, home is a garden and I just miss home. Have you ever changed something that you’ve always done and missed it? Are you, were you are gardening bug and you miss that fresh smell of newly turned soil? What have you done differently this year that left you missing what you did last?

1. Transdisc (13877) | 1 month ago | I can relate to this, LJ. Until very recently, I was very active outside and I miss that. I miss using my hands to create something. I miss riding my tractor around the farm. I miss smelling the forest after the rain. I miss working up a good sweat and being able to actually see what I accomplished after a hard days work.

ljegbers (5645) | 1 month ago | Hello oh great bear. Your presence is greatly missed! I thrive on physical labor and maybe that's why I'm all out of sorts this year. I too miss the days of riding on a tractor, but that was my last year of high school when I helped my dad farm. So much peace sitting on a tractor cultivating or rotatary hoeing a field. Last time I was in a tractor was about 9 years ago when I brought ground feed down to the cattle. I have to admit that I love our loader, well the old one anyway. I could get lost of hours pushing trees and leveling things. Our new loader is all hydraulics and it’s all levers. I agree there is a lot to be said about accomplishing something after a hard days work.

Transdisc (13877) | 1 month ago | Yes, the loader is loads of fun (excuse the bad pun!) I'm pushed down many a tree!
| |
ljegbers (5645) | 1 month ago | Heehee, that's a good one! I used it mostly for leveling dirty and moving dirt. I've buildt up landscaping, made a 2 foot hump, if you will, and added stones into it. Helps as a snow break in the winter, home of a ground cover flower in the summer.

2. makingpots (4049) | 1 month ago | I miss getting dirty too, but in a little different way than you are referring. I miss sitting at a pottery wheel for hours on end and walking away looking like I have been rolling in mud. I have had a few changes in lifestyle over the last few years and my pottery has taken a backseat lately. Actually, it is more like in the trunk these days. I can sure relate to missing fresh veggies on the table.
| |
| |
Transdisc (13877) | 1 month ago | Yes, fresh veggies are nice too, makingpots. I have not been a very successful gardener, but there are some vegetables that I do miss that resulted from being planted by my own hand.

ljegbers (5645) | 1 month ago | I hope you find the pleasure feeling like that again soon. I think sometimes we do scrafic what our own interests are because or lifes takes us different places. Some 13 years ago I grew or made almost everything that my children ate because my son had food allergies. It was a lot of work, but I do miss those days.

3. Rozie37 (6309) | 1 month ago | Well, what stopped you from playing in the mud this year? I have never had a green thumb, I could not even get a garden to grow weeds, much less anything of value, but I digress. I know one thing that I haven't done this year, that I miss from last year is spending more time out in the sun. Usually I like to play games and read in the sun, but this year I have been spending much time inside under two fans. One was not enough. For some reason, I am not enjoying the heat very much this summer. I hope I feel better before the cold returns.
| |
| |
ljegbers (5645) | 1 month ago | I do too Rozie. I admit that I stay in during the hours of noon and 4 because the sun is too intense for me the older I get. I don't mind the heat too much, but the sun is just too intense. There were a lot of things stopping me and I'm married to one of them! He's dug up most of our yard and I'm still trying to deal with that, plus we had so much tree damage from ice last winter that there is a lot of clean up that needs to be done. Then wind storms and just keeping on top of that with mowing and chopping weeds, a garden just would have been too much.

4. Goodie123 (6849) | 1 month ago | I miss getting out in the garden LJ. But my back kills me when I bend over. We have had so much rain the weeds have taken over. Hopefully hubby will find time on the weekend to help me. If he digs the weeds I can just pull them out. I never had weeds until I used horse manure that came from a paddock. It is best to use the manure from the stables. Paddock manure is full of all types of weeds and grass.

| |
ljegbers (5645) | 1 month ago | I agree. I had a weed free patch and them the old man put manure from the cattle yard in it. It was so bad that I just gave up. That was several years ago that he that. Told him I'd divorce him if he did it again. LOL!
| |
Goodie123 (6849) | 1 month ago | I would have to divorce myself LJ, as it was me who used the manure. hehe

ljegbers (5645) | 1 month ago | I was a big DR Who fan in the 80's. I think that was the original one? All other life stopped when that show was on. I'm so happy for you X. I know before I married my last husband, I worked 2 jobs, some summers 3. Now I'm at a point to take a step back and be a mom. I just want this time with my children before they're all grown up and move away.

7. danishcanadian (13728) | 1 month ago | My husband loves to garden, and I know that if we dind't live in an apartment, we'd definitely have one. I'm not big on gardening, but he likes it. My mother has a farm, so though we still lie in an apartmet, he's welome to go up there anyime, and play in her garden.

ljegbers (5645) | 1 month ago | A green thumb is hard to cure, even when you live in an apparement. I'm glad he has an outlet to get his hands dirty. I moved off the farm and into one of the biggest cities of our state - talk about culture shock - that lasted about 3 months and I gradually filtered back down to where my heart is.

8. jer31558 (2280) | 1 month ago | Though I haven't had a garden since my childhood, I do still miss it even after these years. Since growing up I just haven't lived in a place where it was possible to plant a garden. I still miss those days.

ljegbers (5645) | 1 month ago | I hear you. I missed those days too when I lived in the city and then a smaller town (25,000). After my son was born it was time to get back to the country roots. I'm very thankful for my little farm place, even if I'm not gardening on it.

9. sparkofinsanity (1793) | 1 month ago | This year I had to break down and buy an edge trimmer. Sadly, my back and knees no longer allow me the pleasure of crawling around the edges of my gardens with a pair of scissors deadheading plants and trimming the grass that the lawnmower can't quite reach without taking out the gardens themselves. I can't stay down on my knees and work in the dirt the way I used to. I now have to depend on electric 'toys' to do most of the work.*Sigh*.
| |
| |
ljegbers (5645) | 1 month ago | You know your response about being on your knees and then now relying on electric toys could bring this into a whole nother direction Spark. Hope your new toys are working for you. I was given a edge trimmer for mothers day several years ago, but hubby took it with him to edge round the corn bins and I haven't seen it since - that was 3 years ago.

10. mummymo (10371) | 1 month ago | I really must get my mind out of the gutter lj - I had a different connotation completely from that title! I wish I could do gardening but i am afraid I have a brown thumb instead of a green one and everything dies on me! I miss a lot from 2 years ago that I could still do and now can't but I am ever hopeful that one day I will be able to get back to what I was - not who as I have learned a lot from having to accept more limitations! Reading about all those veggies has made me hungry but I better not eat as it was after 1 am and not a good idea - a glass of water it shall have to be! Hugs xxx

ljegbers (5645) | 1 month ago | Hee, I'd say - see Spark's response, I don't know if that was intentional or now, but it sure could take a turn there! I know about limitations. I've had surgery before and then had to go under again the next morning. When I was released they told me I couldn't do anything. It was all very frustration so my heart is with you. I think the most devastating thing is not being able to pull my children up on my lap or pick them up and hug them. They were 4-1/2 and 3-1/2 at the time.
| |
mummymo (10371) | 1 month ago | LOL Sparks response was classic - I bet she planned it that way! I am so sorry that you had such a bad time of it lj and I know how awful it is not to be able to lift or have your kids on your knees. Even though my youngest is 6 she is still very cuddly and affectionate - in fact so is my 14 year old, all 6 ft 1 inches of him! I really have to try and not let them see that their hugs are hurting me! xxx
| |
ljegbers (5645) | 1 month ago | You know someone said here that I'd just love you once I met you and you know, I think that regardless of what you can or can not do, regardless if those hugs are uncomfortable, I bet you're children see nothing but love radiate from you. I hope you're enjoying your quiet time, even if you miss them!
