I learnt once I was traveling with a group of Chinese artists around Spain and often there were not any forks on the table, so instead of asking for one I decided to learn. It takes some effort but now I manage very well. I still use them at work as I can't take forks through security in an airport and they never break unlike cheap plastic forks. Only they are not always too practical to pick the last bits, but I can use a spoon for that.

Everything is practice in life isn't it? Yes I can eat with chosticks very well, but I really prefer the fork. LOL

Mee too, I still prefer the fork.

I'm not all that good, but I wouldn't starve if that's all I had to work with.

I was stationed in Japan for a year and we were in town eating at a small restaurant one day and it was more of a western style diner than a traditional Japanese restaurant.

I remember watching this man try to eat with a fork and he was having the toughest time with it. He had his fork upside down and kept trying to balance his food on it and eat it that way. He had no concept of using it to stab his food or scoop it up. I wasn't making fun of him, but I did think it was cute.

I wpuld never think that using a fork would be problematic. It looks a lot easier than the sticks but it seems that you have to get used to it too.

myLot reputation of 78/100. bloodhunter13 (184)   ranked 510 out of 3,326 in eating  1 month ago

poor guy. maybe you should show him how to use it properly. and if he prefers his way then let him be. i can't imagine seeing a guy struggling to use the fork. he's probably used to use spoon so it shouldn't be hard to use fork

I learned to use chopsticks when my friend decided we should eat at a Japanese restaurant before watching a movie. She's Chinese and I told her I really don't know how to use the chopsticks. But since I love the food there, I made it a point to go have lunch there every weekend I'm out in the mall, basically just to learn how to use chopsticks. Haha. I still ask for spoon and fork. But I try to use the chopsticks with the caesar's salad they serve with the meal. I am learning how to use it and I'm proud. lol

myLot reputation of 95/100. overwings (1964)   ranked 74 out of 3,326 in eating  5 months ago

Well, people still look at me in a strange way when I use the sticks instead of a plastic fork...

myLot reputation of 78/100. bloodhunter13 (184)   ranked 510 out of 3,326 in eating  1 month ago

i never thought of carrying a pair of chopsticks around. now you give me a good reason on why i should get a nice pair of chopsticks to be carried around everywhere. i often have troubles when eating the light meals (usually noodles) provided when there's a college event going on especially if i happened to be the person after the last person to get the plastic fork/spoon i ended up using my fingers (i don't really mind but washing hands is another thing) or i tear up a bit of the foam container's edge to form a spoon:P

Hi overwings,

I am learning and I can use it barely, not an expert user..LOL! I am very comfortable with spoon and fork or fork alone since they is how I was raised..But, I love to learn best...

My husband used it very great..I wish I will be as good as he does..But, whenever we are in a restaurant, I prefer to have fork since I can do it with ease and less effort!

Hi there. I've been able to use them pretty well, except if they're really polished and slippery. I haven't used them in a long time, but I'm sure I can pick them up if I wanted to. I still prefer a fork and spoon as I am more accustomed to that and I find that I eat faster when I use them instead.

I love chopsticks. I taught myself how to use them when I was in my late teens; it has come in handy quite a few times since then.

To practise, I used to compete with friends trying to pick the most peas one by one. LOL

I'm ethnic Chinese and so it goes without saying that I know how to eat with chopsticks. I guess, it is something that one learns to do when you're young and it's part of your culture. Eating with chopsticks is, if you look at it, ideal for Chinese food because with Chinese food, the main dishes are shared in the centre and the individuals use the sticks to pick at different dishes from the centre to have with their rice. You'll also find that ingredients in a Chinese dish are usually diced smaller than in comparable Western dishes. So when you look at the way Chinese dine, the chopsticks make sense. If you are sharing food from the centre, the sticks are more hygienic than a fork. If parts of a dish are sliced in small chunks, you can pick them up with sticks. By comparison, you definately cannot pick up a tenderloin with chopsticks.

For me, I can use chopsticks and a fork and knife or a fork and spoon. I try to use the appropriate equipment for the cuisine. I for one, take pride in the fact that I can eat with my hands - which is the only way to enjoy Indian cuisine. There's an technique to using your hands - you're only supposed to eat with the tips of your fingers. The funniest was going to a function of a 100 Indians and the only non-Indian in the whole place (me) was the only person eating with his hands.

myLot reputation of 78/100. bloodhunter13 (184)   ranked 510 out of 3,326 in eating  1 month ago

wow. that's kinda funny. but i guess they just don't want to dirty their hands. or maybe they don't want people to look down at them for eating with their hands (sometimes people do give that sort of look, like "can't you use utensils for that?") i love eating with my hand but it's funny watching people eating something like rice with more than just the fingers it went to the palm. it almost look like they're gonna make riceballs with the rice in their palm. then again i was like that too

well i'd like to say that i'm skilled in the use of chopsticks. afterall i'm chinese so it's only fair that i learnt the skill since young. personally i love using chopsticks to eat. i can eat anything and everything with them. it is elegant and can basically pick everything up. guess i won't be trading my chopsticks for anything else soon. cheers;p

myLot reputation of 95/100. overwings (1964)   ranked 74 out of 3,326 in eating  5 months ago

May be not everything. If rice is too loose you have problems to pick it. If grains are all stuck together then it is pretty easy. A rice salad dressed with some olive oil is not an east dish to eat with chopsticks. Too slippery:)

myLot reputation of 99/100. applefreak (1633)   ranked 405 out of 3,326 in eating  5 months ago

for me these are not a problem. having used chopsticks for the past thirty over years, i've learnt to pick up almost anything with chopsticks. i can pick up glass marbles from oil as well. guess practice really makes perfect in certain matters. i love using chopsticks and carry a pair with me all the time. cheers;p

I will eat sushi with chopsticks, because I swear the metal from my utensils leaches out into the vinegared rice and then I taste the metal. Otherwise, I use my forks and spoons and knives. However, if I get chopsticks to eat with instead of fork and knife, I'll just use that- it really makes no difference to me either way.

I have never tried to eat with chopssticks before. I would probaly make a mess! The food would go flying across the room when I tried to pick it up! I think it takes some practice to use them.
