i didn't used to suffer from mood swings when i was younger, but it seems since my late 30's i get reaslly down in the dumps and sometimes i feel like locking myself away from everyone until i feel better, even my partner tends to get out of my way when i am like that, in general i am a happy outgoing person, but coming up to my cycle i am like the monster from hell, i have used all kinds of remedies and nothing seems to work apart from evening primrose oil, but even that isn't all good, i was told that if i eat healthier and drink lots of water then i won't get mood swings like i do now, but i am not sure if that will work, last week i couldn't even bare to listen to peoples voices because it went through me, also usually i have very good patience, but now i feel it's a short fuse and i snap at people for no reason, i am not usually like that on a "normal" day...is there anything i can take or do to stop feeling so crabby all the time, i am now in my mid 40's and i feel so tired and worn out when i am due for my (girlie week) and i just hate the build up when i am due, please, any tips would be appreciated, thankyou

I really feel for you as I know how bad it can affect some people, I must be the luckiest woman alive as I have never had them since a teenager even though everything works as I have gone onto have three children which is bizarre. One off my girls takes vitamin B6 to help with theirs and there is also a product by a company called Herbalife which is called Tang Quai which is supposed to help. Sorry I can't be much more help on this one. I always make the girls rest more when they are feeling like this and ofcourse by them chocolate too. Ellie:D

aaah a friend told me about vitamin B6 and said it is good, maybe i should get some coz i really hate feeling like this each month, it seems to get worse as i get older...it's awful, some months i don't feel a thing and i am fine, other months i wanna chew my arms off...lol....i often tell my partner that i no longer need my womb and someone else could use it, i swear, if they did womb transplants for women who could not concieve, they could have mine without a doubt, i feel much better today because my cycle has finished but i dread the monthsd ahead....

It sounds like you might be experiencing "peri-menopause". It happens sometimes many years before actual menopause and is caused by your estrogen level dropping slightly. Even a slight drop can cause incredible mood swings!

I know. Been there, done that! I think it started with me when I was in my mid-40's. I didn't know what was going on until I had my estrogen level checked. My doctor thought it might be peri-menopause on a hunch, so I had the bloodwork done. Sure enough, that was it. My estrogen level was only very slightly lower.

Actually, now that I think of it, the estrogen level might be rising. I can't remember now which way it goes, but whatever it is, it was changing. I was put on hormone replacement therapy right away and my mood swings stopped completely after a few weeks.

Of course, I'm not a doctor, so don't take my word for it. But it might not be a bad idea to have your hormone levels checked. That may be your problem. If you don't want to have the bloodwork done, you can try eating more soy and taking black cohosh. They are both very good for steadying hormone levels.

P.S. Feeling more tired than normal is also a symptom of peri-menopause.

myLot reputation of 95/100. GardenGerty (14213)   ranked 273 out of 3,916 in depression  4 months ago

As you swing into peri menopause, it is the estrogen level falling. Soy is full of phyto estrogens, some people like wild yam extract, and yes, Black Cohosh works. That is what I do instead of an estrogen replacement, because it was giving me headaches. A good vitamin and mineral supplement for women does not hurt, either.

peri-menopause? hmmm, does that mean i am going to go through the change? jeez, why do us women have to put up with all this stuff, guys should try it out some time, my partner said that i could be going through the change and i almost chewed his eyeballs out....LOL.....i am thinking about going to see my doc, i am a very laid back calm person, but lately i have been really moody and snappy, also i bloat up like a beached whale and i just feel awful, the slightest thing sets me off, i am not always this bad when my monthlys come, it's every month or so, but not EVERY month, and when it happens, even the cat gets out of the way...lol, no seriously, i hate feeling like that, my partner doesn't have a clue what i am going through and it's hard to explain to him, when he wants his "wicked way" with me, i always tell him no coz i just don't feel like it, this only happens when i am due though, not any other time, but he does choose his moments, then he gets all paranoid and thinks i don't fancy him any more, we start arguing, and it snowcballs into a major thing...it just gets way out of hand sometimes and he doesn't understand why i am feeling like this, he thinks that i am up for it all the time, i am usually but not when i am due...i wish he'd get it into his head that sometimes i like a little bit of time alone when i am like that, he tends to pick the wrong time to ask....lol..poor thing, it's not his fault but it doesn't help the matter.... sad

myLot reputation of 99/100. mentalward (1830)   ranked 332 out of 3,916 in depression  4 months ago

LOL It's a guy thing... picking the wrong time to ask.

This can affect you every other month or every 3 months, or whatever. It affects everyone differently.

And, yes, you will go through the change... we all do eventually! LOL But you might not go through it for real for up to 10 years after the start of peri-menopause.

It definitely sounds like peri-menopause could be the culprit. Explain to your partner that it is probably your hormone levels fluctuating and you can't help it. I wish they could go through these things, too, but we'd probably have a much higher murder rate if men went through menopause!

Please do ask your doctor about it. If it is peri-menopause, the "fix" is really simple and you'll be back to your old self in no time!

I wish you the best!

myLot reputation of 91/100. Neriz69 (726)   ranked 690 out of 3,916 in depression  3 months ago

I'll ask my doctor about that too and have my estrogen level check. Is fatigue a part of the symptom. I'm 39 and I get tired very easily now compared to before.

myLot reputation of 99/100. mentalward (1830)   ranked 332 out of 3,916 in depression  3 months ago

Yes, Neriz... fatigue is part of peri menopause.

myLot reputation of 99/100. schulzie (1144)   ranked 3,396 out of 3,916 in depression  3 months ago

OMG! I think I am going through peri-menopause too! I have thought so for the past 3 - 4 years. I have mood swings and never used to and my periods are different than they used to be. Is that another symptom of peri-menopause? How about feeling hot all the time? I just wonder. Since you went through it I was wondering if you could shed more light on it.

confused

Thanks!

myLot reputation of 99/100. mentalward (1830)   ranked 332 out of 3,916 in depression  3 months ago

Yep, Schulzie... it sounds like it. Feeling hot, yep... hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, fatigue, blah blah blah. It sucks! I had peri menopause for about 6 years when I started the real thing. But hormone replacement therapy is awesome! My doc said he's never seen any connection between HRT and cancer and my mom took Premarin until she was 80! I don't worry about some statistics... I go by what I see and what I know. Your doctor can fix you right up!

Not every remedy works for every person. I take Black Cohosh, but I am menopausal or post menopausal due to a hysterectomy. You may even feel worse for a month or two because you have just quit smoking. I have also heard that extra calcium, like yogurt and lowfat milk is helpful. Keep cool if it is summer where you are. Mild exercise, like long walks. Lavender oil is a soothing fragrance. Hope that some of these things help. Make sure you beef up on proteins and reduce carbs, and possibly caffeine.

myLot reputation of 97/100. tattylashes (2202)   ranked 127 out of 3,916 in depression  4 months ago

well i am not sure if they sell Black Cohosh here, can you get it over the counter or prescribed by the doctor? i always use lavender in my home because i grow it, also it's my fave fragrance, i will ask my chemist if they do Black Cohosh here and see if it works...thankyou....

myLot reputation of 95/100. GardenGerty (14213)   ranked 273 out of 3,916 in depression  4 months ago

Check the health food stores if you have some, although I buy mine at Wal Mart. It is in vitamins and supplements. I do not know why they would not sell Black Cohosh in Europe, it has been studied extensively in Germany.

I have had mood swings and terrible belly aching when having my period and people shouldn't come to close to me as I felt like simply clawing them away from me.
I found out that lavender (in your tub for example) can do a great job and so does meditation. Just sit down with some calm music, try to relax your body and let your thoughts either drift of or try to get your head clear.
Thinking about a warm waterfull and washing your mood swings away actually did a lot for me, it's like training your subconcious to not let the pms out or so?

Staying away from milky products is also sometimes told to help but I'm not sure where they base this on.

Although this is not a medical diagnosis and my degrees are not in medicine, this sounds to me like something I jokingly call an Oil of Evening Primrose deficiency. Although a few hard-line "western medicine" advocates have recently tried to debunk Oil of Evening Primrose as beneficial to women plagued by this centuries old problem, I can tell you from personal experience and the experience of many friends that it WORKS!

It takes from one to six months for most women to get results, but the results are AWESOME. The only really noticeable side effect is a nicer complexion, rflmao, but you will see that resulting from your having quit as well, so ther you go.

Once the Primrose Oil capsules start working for you, it is possible to switch to borage oil which is less expensive but I think everyone should start out with the cold-pressed oil of evening primrose. I used only 1/6 of the recommended amount and got drastic improvement within a month the first time I used it and within a year had the situation completely under control.

myLot reputation of 97/100. tattylashes (2202)   ranked 127 out of 3,916 in depression  3 months ago

well i do use the evening promrose oil each month and it helps but the stress comes back, i usually get stressed about a week to 10 days before my cycle, i know that's not like other women but when my cycle does come, i feel great, it's like a release, i have an appt to see the nurse at the clinic, so i will get some help from her, this is a clinic just for women with these problems, so i'll let you know what she says...thankyou.... happy

I started the PMS problems the day I started my first menstrual period. I always had severe cramping and bloating; and God forbid anyone look at me wrong or say a word to me. Mine have calmed down over the last few years, but with that came more than normal irregular periods. The one thing that I have found that has helped me the most is exercise. Now, I'm not the health freak type and never did get enough exercise, but I don't mind taking a long walk here and there. It seems like at first the cramps are more severe when I start walking, but as I keep going they get better, and eventually go away completely. I think that the walks also help my mood, I always feel better emotionally after a long walk. Other than that, try a heating pad. That's the only things that I've ever done to help my cramping, I don't like taking pain relievers.

myLot reputation of 97/100. tattylashes (2202)   ranked 127 out of 3,916 in depression  3 months ago

when i get like this i usually get a lavender bath and lock myself in the bathroom for a few hours, so i do get some me time, it usually starts about 7 to 10 days before my cycle and i really hate it, i dread the next time round...so i'm going to a womens clinic to get an estrogen check....thankyou.... happy

It went through that predicament when for few days before I get my period, I'd become incredibly irritable driving all the people around me crazy. All mild things and tiny inconveniences even bad smells could bring me to boil. Doctors say it’s related to the fluctuation of hormones in my body prior to my menstrual period hence I grapple simultaneously with several emotional, physical, and behavioral symptoms before my period. But here is what helped me cope with it:

1. Indulging in a 30 minute to one hour exercise where I really sweat out. It is really great because not only does it makes me feel lighter and stronger but it also eliminated the cramps and pain during the period and it gave a regular sound sleep.

2. Eating a healthy, balanced diet. I eat enough of whole grain, veggies and fruits and I avoid excessive sugar and salt. I stop intake of any caffeine in any form and fatty foods as well.

3. Taking 3 tablespoonful of Virgin coconut oil a day. This wonderful oil has so many benefits and I recommend you try this on yourself.

4. (And this one is the most highly recommended.) I never miss my daily meditation on God's word and I always look on passages that concerns about self control and anger. And I pray a lot to God so He could help me overcome.

Those things did it for me and I thank God a lot!

It has been established that most menstrual difficulties occur due to a hormonal imbalance. There are many variables that can adversely affect the body's hormonal integrity including inadequate nutrition, stress and disease. Nonetheless, researchers worldwide are finding more and more evidence that the main cause for hormonal imbalance and its related disorders are chemicals that are abundantly found in the environment, food and water – chemicals that have a similar structure to the female hormone estrogen, and when in excess, can devastate women's and men's bodies. These estrogenic chemicals have shown the capacity to bind to estrogen receptors in the body, causing an unnatural increase in estrogen levels leading to an excess of estrogen over other hormones. This excess of estrogen in the body has shown to cause severe side effects with symptoms including weight gain, allergies, headaches, blood sugar disorders, hypertension, fatigue, irritability, mood swings, and depression as well as increased susceptibility for female disorders, diabetes and cancer.

What's notable here is the fact that the above symptoms are virtually the same as those associated with PMS. It then becomes evidently clear that chronic exposure to estrogenic chemicals which leads to an excess of estrogenic substances in the body is a major cause for PMS symptons. Thus, the solution for PMS requires the decisive means to counteract this excess of estrogen while eliminating its related side effects.

I hear you. It's one of those pre-menopausal symptoms and does indeed start sometime in the late 30's. It's part of the body starting to go haywire due to menopause. Anyhow, you should definitely discuss this with your doctor. They have a lot of suggestions on hand. One thing that has a calming effect and also may help with the pain is eating chocolate, just a little bit each day the week before and first day off. The irritability is difficult to deal with. Find an outlet to let off steam such as a punching bag or regular jogging sessions. You may also want to look into some calming techniques. There are some breathing techniques I use when I feel my short fuse going off.

Now the tired and worn out feeling may also have an underlying physical problem. Our metabolism changes during the 'change' and pre-'change' phase. A diet which used to be fine won't provide you anymore with all the nutrients you need. There may be an iron deficiency or something like that. Again, something your doctor should look into. I know that my period causes me to be more anemic these days and I have to eat accordingly or I won't be able to keep up with my kids;)

Anyhow, you shouldn't have to put up with this for the next ten plus years. There is help out there. Your doctor can set you on the right path. And that doesn't necessarily mean pills;)
