Universal ownership | | I've been thinking a lot lately about St Francis of Assisi (one of my favourite saints), and his burning belief in the universal ownership of goods. I read that he would often stop and give his shirt (and other things too) to someone who didn't have, and he'd say that he was giving what he had borrowed back to his brother or sister (though he hadn't of course borrowed it in the literal sense). He said that to be TRULY free, one should have no possessions at all. I can see the wisdom in that - after all, when you start to accumulate things, you lose some of your freedom through having to preserve and protect them. Of course, I don't quite have the courage to live like he did!!! What do you think about it?

So I guess all the material possessions that we have we are only temporary custodians of them. I was on holidays and one person I met was a bit stressed by it all as he said that he was worried that his house might be broken into while he was away. I thought things that you owned should have some use or give you pleasure not cause you stress and worry. I gave up the corporate lifestyle and income for a better lifestyle. I don't live in a big house, or drive an expensive car, but I enjoy my life and my computer is the one thing that I couldn't live without. Apart from that I don't really care too much about it all. It takes a bit of courage to drop out at 47 and think, nah, I want a better lifestyle not the 14-16 hour days that I worked before.
