Landmarks |
|
I have visited quite a few places that are considered to be a tourist landmark and found most to be pretty interesting or unusual to see. However, watching a programme last night they had a poll on where they asked 100 people to name the landmark they were most disappointed with and the Eiffel Tower came out top. I personally have been up this and thought it was very nice. Are there any landmarks or tourist attractions you visited expecting to be wowed and were disappointed by?

1. Wolfechu (824) | 1 month ago | I don't know, I liked Blackpool Tower, let alone the Eiffel one. I'm easily pleased, though. But then, I'm also the person who's been back and forth to St Louis for going on seven years, and living here permanently now, and I still haven't been up the damned Arch;)

frankiecesca (615) | 1 month ago | Well thats the thing you see as they said that the Eiffel had nothing else but the tower which is why people weren't disappointed by the Blackpool tower as it has so much going on in the building it's in too! Personally I like them both! lol x

Wolfechu (824) | 1 month ago | That always kills me. It's like the people who hike the first ten miles of the Appalachian Trail (one of the longest wilderness trail in the US), and then give up because 'it's not what they expected'. What were they expecting? Moving sidewalks? Likewise, it's the Eiffel Tower. It's been there a while. As far as I know, there's never been plans to put bowling alleys and a rollercoaster in the top;)

2. maximax8 (3980) | 1 month ago | I am very surprised to hear that people were disappointed by the Eiffel Tower. I think that it is a very interesting looking structure and it is just one of the amazing sites that a tourist can be in Paris. Maybe the people thought that it was expensive to go to the top of the Eiffel Tower. Which other landmarks did people find disappointing? I loved seeing the Mayan ruins in Tikal in Guatemala, climbing on of the temples to enjoy sunrise was a special experience that I will always treasure. I had a similar time seeing the Mayan ruins in Belize. There is was so exciting to hear a jaguar calling. Part of what I appreciated was the sense of peace and quiet and seeing only a small number of tourists. I went to Talum in Mexico early and it was fairly peaceful, however mid morning thousands of tourists arrived. All the loud crowds of people ruined the lovely atmosphere there.

frankiecesca (615) | 1 month ago | Yes I can only think maybe price! I always think that too that when it is too crowded you cannot appreciate the sight for what it is or the way it was meant to be enjoyed. I plan to go to Chitchen Itza next year whilst in Mexico and am hoping that turns out to be as good as I hope for!

6. applefreak (1116) | 1 month ago | well tourist landmarks came to be because they are unique. i'm sure these landmarks became well known because everyone wants to see them. i would love to vist paris and i'm sure i'll go to the eiffel tower. it's more of a 'been here done that' thing than anything else. what were these people expecting of the eiffel tower? i have to say that it has been romanticised too much over the years. i guess i always travel with an open mind. what can i expect of a place that i've never been before? no expectations= no disappointments. cheers;p

frankiecesca (615) | 1 month ago | That is right - if you don't expect much you cannot be disappointed - only hopefully happy becuase it ended up being great! And yes a lot is because everyone wants to see them bu you're right that it might as well be done while you're there just in case you miss something that you could've ended up loving!

7. snowy22315 (4323) | 1 month ago | That's a good question. I think most of the landmarks I have visted did not disappoint. I think the Eiffel tower probably was not worth the wait in line. (I might just be upset about it because it was raining that day) and the Empire State Building while cool, is another one. The White House also is a long wait and you dont get to see alot. Overall I'm satisfied with the landmarks I've seen.

frankiecesca (615) | 1 month ago | I think that is what the problem is with a lot is that the queues are so long that by the time you get in you are thinking is this worth the wait??! And then it's good but it seems like you waited ages for not much!! lol x

frankiecesca (615) | 1 month ago | Yes I would like to go to Stne Henge. I think the queues are alwasy off putting!! The thing that is different about Blackpool tower over Eiffel is that the Blackpool tower has lots of other attractions inside of it to see and do before you even go up it! So it's a good day!! Eiffel tower is more up and thats it! x

10. sunshinelady (5222) | 1 month ago | I can't think of any off hand. I have been to a few places that were considered tourist landmarks. I've been to Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, International Peace Gardens, Garden of the Gods, Lookout Mountain and those are just a few. I have loved each and every place I have visited.
