Why do they want ANWR? email this discussion to a friend?

Oil companies are currently sitting on millions of acres of land. They're leasing these millions of acres of land for drilling purposes, but they are not drilling or even preparing to drill there.

So what's the point in opening up ANWR for drilling if oil companies aren't drilling on the land they already have?

Don't worry about that they will eventually drill. They will have to unless everybody wants to become a recluse because of high gas prices. The truck drivers can only afford to pay so much for gas.

That's a good question. I wish someone would ask the oil company executives that one. My guess as to the answer is that oil companies really do not want to drill for more oil. Profits are higher when supplies are tight. Why would the oil companies want to drill?

myLot reputation of 19/100. MntlWard (479)   ranked 1,116 out of 3,334 in politics  4 weeks ago

Yeah, but why are they lobbying for more drilling access when their goal is to limit drilling to keep the price high?

myLot reputation of 22/100. redyellowblackdog (2838)   ranked 579 out of 3,334 in politics  4 weeks ago

They are lobbying for drilling rights where they don't expect to get them.

myLot reputation of 19/100. MntlWard (479)   ranked 1,116 out of 3,334 in politics  4 weeks ago

Ah! That does make sense!

So they get their friends in the Republican Party to draft a bill that would allow drilling in a wildlife refuge. Those bills get overturned, but they make it look like oil execs are trying to alleviate the gas problem. Then the Republicans use the overturned bills as "proof" that the Democrats are to blame for high gas prices. glare

I figured it was something sneaky like that. ninja

Now, you are getting it. I've tried to get people to think about how top oil executives could possibly be worth their multi million dollar annual salaries. It is not from haveing superior management skills. Middle management is literally full of such people who are excellant but not making the millions per year. To make the millions requires something 'extra'. That 'extra' involves manipulating deceit for profit.

What I don't understand is the whole flight trip over ANWR to look for wildlife. I read in the paper yesterday that they didn't even touch ground, were they only looking for big game? How high in the air were they when they said, there isn't any wildlife up there. I think that it is also said that the Saudi government said during an interview within the last month that the demand and supply are such that the $4 a gallon gas price is way out of line. The government went on to say that the demand is low and supply is high so the basic laws of ecomonics in not applied to this situation.

Part of the problem is that some people are buying oil like shares of stock and not using it for gasoline production. That reduces the oil available for gasoline refinement, which quite possibly drives the gas price even higher than the high price of oil already does.

I looks like your questioned has already been answered. It's all smoke and mirrors, a game the oil companies and Republicans play to keep the prices high and the finger pointed at the Democrats.

Because then they'll have more land to sit on, ready to use to extort the American people when oil is as high as they want it (same reason why they're not using the land they already have, nor are most of the existing refineries working at full capacity).

Simply because there may be no oil on them. It makes sense to drill where you know oil exists instead of spending millions to explore where there probably isn't. They have all said unequivocly that they would trade the leases they currently have for new ones. As far as anwr is concerned. I honestly don't care if the caribu have to take a 5 acre detour on migration, or how ever large, Im tired of paying 4 bucks a gallon for gas, I'm tired of my grocery bill skyrocketing because it now costs twice as much to ship it and because food is now being used to make over priced and less efficiant methanol and bio-diesal. I'm tired of being an economic slave to nations that hate us but love our oil dollars. How much are we to put our selves out because of sheer idealism?

myLot reputation of 19/100. MntlWard (479)   ranked 1,116 out of 3,334 in politics  3 weeks ago

Can you direct me to where the oil companies have said they want to trade the leases? It was my understanding that they won't let go of the leases.

I can't find it on line. It was something I saw on cspan. there is a great deal more myth involved with the perported 68 milion acres of unsed leases, but simply, there is no oil there or they would already be drilling it. To dispell all of it would be far beyond the scope of this forum. In any case, are you really more concerned about caribu? what would it take for you to agrea to drill offshore or anwr, 10 bucks a gallon and 100 dollar a bushal corn? the alternatives, nice as it sounds, are simply not viable right now and until they are fully developed,we are stuck using oil for a little while longer. Also, another myth, it would NOT take a decade to produce from these regions, more like a year and a half to 3 yrears for most, no, Im not going to google the proof, you are probably intelligent enough to do that yourself and make up your own mind. Besides, even the mention of lifting the bans on these things would send oil plummeting in price. Lastweek the white house lifted it's ban on offshore drilling and the price fell like a brick in a few days. this is how the market works.
