I am from Singapore, which is small tropical island located at the tip of the Malaysian Peninsula. Singapore is two degrees North of the Equator and has a warm climate, which also happens to be exceedingly humid (which means you sweat allot)

About 70 percent of Singapore's population is Chinese, mostly descended from migrants from Fujian province in China. The next largest ethnic group is Malay, who make up approximately 21 percent of the population. Ethnic Indians, who are mainly decedents from Tamil workers from India make up about 4 percent and the rest of the population is made up of various other ethnic groups. Incidentally, the population ratios in neighbouring Malaysia are similar, except this time it is the Malays who are in the majority.

There are four main languages. English is the language of everyday communication, while Malay is the "official language' - ie the language used in military commands. The government tries to get most of the Chinese to speak Mandarin and most Singapore Chinese can use Mandarin to a comprehensible level, though many still communicate in their native dialects, particular the Hokkien dialect that is spoken in Fujian Province.

For me, I speak English and German and now I can communicate in Mandarin and Cantonese, which is my native dialect. I can swear in Hokkien, which becomes a natural part of living in Singapore
