Negative Things About My City email this discussion to a friend?

I posted a discussion awhile back regarding my city's negative rating in terms of the high crime rate. It seems that we have once again scored highly in a negative light: America's Top Ten Dying Cities. It is no surprise to those who live in areas that once were highly productive due mostly to the manufacture of automobiles, that with most of the production having been moved out of the United States it would cause a glaring hole in the economy. This has all caused me to wonder why the people who saw this coming did not do more to create jobs for the soon-to-be unemployed workers. I have seen some of these people standing in line to get food and I can't help but wonder why they didn't prepare better since they could surely see the handwriting on the wall. What is your opinion about this? Do you agree that the workers should have done more to prepare themselves for this eventuality?

I have never been afraid to move - to different jobs, cities, even states. But I know that's not the case for some people. My hubby, for instance, has only worked for about 3 companies in his...40 years of working and has only lived in one city/state. I'm not sure he would know how to go about moving to an area that was more booming if things died out around here. Luckily he now has me. happy I responded to another post this morning... I think I've lived in 6 states, 11 cities. I've moved about 39 times in 56 years. I would have no problem moving on if unemployment got to be too high where we live.

I think, kenzie, that it all boils down to whether a person is resistant to change or willing to go along with the flow. I know that I have a hard time adapting to change, but do find the courage to do so when I know that it is to my welfare.

Sometimes they don't get the chance to prepare themselves pal,Here in Scotland there are hardly any factory's left, people are told they will be out of a job in a week or so and that's it, It think it is terrible, New houses are built, young couples buy them, then in a few weeks or months they are up for sale because they no longer have a job and can't pay their mortgage:( xx

These same situations are existing here in America, weemam, but I do believe the problem would not be nearly so great if people would learn to live more simply. That by no means places the blame for the loss of jobs on the population however.

I guess people do not believe it will happen to them when the layoffs come. My husband's dad, many many years ago, had a chance to leave the upper peninsula of Michigan, and did so, because he could see the end of the mining business coming up.Others did not see it coming, or think it would affect them. Many books recommend that we have a way out, extra training, save some money, stock up on food. It is hard to have those extra resources. One guarantee is that the unexpected will happen.

I agree, GG, that nobody expects to be jobless or homeless from one day to the next, but it is as you say, the only guarantee is that the unexpected will happen. I understand that many people are struggling to make ends meet, but you wouldn't realize it when you see how the rich and famous are living it up. They claim to care about the plight of the poor but I don't believe they really do.

They need to try it for themselves. Some people, after such an experience, become more compassionate. Others just get a tighter grip on their own things and ignore the plight of many.

I do agree that workers should have been better prepared if they knew in advance there would be work layoffs and run the risk of being without work. I also think everyone should have a financial backup plan just as a precaution. I feel so bad for families who are not prepared for something of this nature and have to worry about their next meal or if they can keep cool in the summer months.

I live in St. Louis and the crime here has been absolutely horrible this summer. The murder stats are higher than last year for the same time frame. Layoffs here in the auto and beer industry have hurt the economy. We are supposedly one of the most dangerous cities. This is true in any part of the country where poverty is an issue. Althought we live in the suburbs where it's safe, I'm cautious when out at night alone.

My heart goes out to all those who don't have the means to feed their families or pay their utility bills in order to keep cool.

I also live in a city with a high crime rate, carolbee, and I know that crime increases significantly when people are hungry, homeless and hopeless. At the same time I also see criminals plying their trade just because it is what they choose to do. If people continue to go hungry there is bound to be consequences in the future.
