Olive Oil or Vegetable Oil? |
|
Hello Mylotters! I want to ask if olive oil or vegetable oil is better for cooking. I guess it depends on what a person is cooking, but I prefer to use olive oil cause it is healthier. Yet it is also more expensive. My neighbor expressed to me once that olive oil is only used for pasta, but I disagree. I like to use it to fry vegetables like potatoes and zuchini. Has anyone ever been so broke they uses vegetable oil for pasta? Come on, be honest now.

1. winewhisky (243) | 4 months ago | I only use olive oil as that's what my family used for cooking everything. Other vegetable oils taste strange to me. I have more expensive olive oils for salad dressings and in pasta, and then a more basic, cheaper olive oil for putting in soups and for frying. I buy whatever olive oil is on offer in the supermarket for basic uses.

towongfoo27 (857) | 4 months ago | I prefer olive oil, too! The taste is lighter, and makes a nice touch to just about any food! It is healthier, too. My mom has told me that olive oil stays for long in the refridgerator, too. I didn't even know olive oil could go bad!

2. sugarplum9084 (1045) | 4 months ago | I would say that olive oil is better, I think it tastes better as well. My family uses it for everything, the only thing we do use vegetable oil for is for the food fryer (like for french fries etc), which we rarely use anyway since we like to eat healthy. Olive Oil is more expensive than vegetable oil, you are correct, but it's something that you don't necessarily use everyday, so I am okay with that fact. Happy mylotting!

3. fluffnflowers (1368) | 4 months ago | I use olive, grapeseed, and sesame oil, mainly, in my cooking. The olive oil goes into savory breads, tomato sauces, oil sauces, dressings, etc. The grapeseed oil goes for most of my stir fries, for cooking things that are going to be added to a light sauce, or in sweet baked goods. The sesame oil is sooooo good in a lot of the Asian inspired dishes and marinades I do. I use soybean oil if I need to fry something and won't be saving the oil. Canola and other vegetable oil mixes smell too gross for me to use!

sweetdesign (1902) | 4 months ago | I have been wanting to try grapeseed oil. I have tried sesame oil mainly in my asian dishes i make on occasion.

towongfoo27 (857) | 4 months ago | I have never tried gradessed or sesame oil, but now I know of it (and it is in my mind), I wil have to try it. I know sometimes I like to toast certain breads in the oven, and then heat up some olive oil with spice in the microwave, and use it for a dipping sauce!

4. sweetdesign (1902) | 4 months ago | I disagree with your neighbor. I use olive oil a lot. I use it to stir fry with, on my grilled veggies and in dressings. I also use vegitable oil. I love both. It depends on what I am making as to what kind of oil I use. I use peanut oil for frying especially deep frying.

towongfoo27 (857) | 4 months ago | I also disagree with my neighbor, then again she thinks she knows everything and is the law on what goes! Be that as it may, she actually inclined me to feel wrong for even sharing information with her that I like to cook my potatoes in it! How does that work?

towongfoo27 (857) | 4 months ago | I also prefer olive oil to vegetable oil. I wonder where olives are grown and cultivated? I even like to buy the green olives from Aldis and eat them straight from the container for a quick snack! I also wonder what exactly are the health benefits to olive oil?

I feel spretty strongly about using olive oil. I think olive oil is good for cooking and it is good for many things really.

8. thebeaddoodler (1869) | 4 months ago | Olive oil is more expensive than vegetable oils, but it is healthier and I use very little of it. I like to use it for frying potatoes too, but it just takes a bare skim of oil on the bottom of the skillet to fry them. I rarely buy any other kind of oil.

|
towongfoo27 (857) | 4 months ago | Although olive oil is healthier, I admit I have to watch the amount I actually use for cooking up my favorite foods, like potatoes, onions, and zuchini.

Munchkin547 (947) | 4 months ago | Thought i'd put my nose in here as well! hehe i've heard that olive oil is really good for repairing dry and damaged hair too, apparently you eave it on your hair to soak in for a couple of hours and it works a treat! i've never tried it, i think it might smell funny but it would seem that olive oil has lots of iferent uses, not just cooking!! hehe xx
