What type of examination do you prefer? |
Personally, I hate objective and enumeration type of tests because I hate memorizing and although I will surely have a greater chance of passing the exam, memorizing just isn't the thing for me. One moment I memorize information and later in my life I think I wouldn't remember them anymore. I like examinations that require analysis just like math and programming problems (not that I'm good at both of them). It's better to think and analyze than just memorize things. So what type of examination do you prefer?

blanne (104) | 5 months ago | Well personally, I rarely do reviews because I always cram. Cramming is the biggest thing I do. And that's why I hate memorization. When you cram, you panic and not everything you try to memorize gets inside your head. Whereas if the exam only requires logic, it's better. You only have to sit on one side and understand the information a bit and they you are done! I love essays. But I almost hated it yesterday because my hands got all tired from writing. But I love them and I think it's a great way to express your ideas. But an objective essay? The objective part kills the enjoyment of answering essays. I think if I have to encounter that kind of examination, I would truly struggle. And I think you are right, I will surely hate it! Anyway, thanks for your comment! So are you a programmer? Any tips?:)

ishralene09 (1345) | 5 months ago | A tip? I'm just a graduate, ain't got a job yet. But for a tip...hmm...first, focus on the love, you must love it. heehee. Then when the problem is given, I do two things...first, I try to understand the capabilities and limitation of the programming language given, as well as all the functions I know of, and second I try to understand what is needed to be accomplished in the problem. Then mesh up the two, solved. I think I never used a pseudocode or flowchart, always write my answers in C format. I usually end up in a program that has a poor runtime than a program that is well thought off, but hey, it's an exam. For the real world though, it's your shot. I never pay any attention to those subjects before in college, now I understand the situation and suffer the consequences. And an objective essay exam truly removes the fun of the essay. I remember getting a 2 out of 20 items in my Humanities exam my fourth year at college simply because it's objective and there's a definite answer to the questions. What a stupid exam.

blanne (104) | 5 months ago | 2 out of 20?! Stupid exam indeed. That reminds me. I think I should rate my teacher poor when it comes to giving exams. I don't really care what happens to her if I do it. All I want is revenge. Hehe. Anyway, so what programming languages do you know? BTW, all I know is C. I once learned Java way back in high school but totally forgot about it now. Does it really help to learn C first before learning Java? I can sense that I am getting a bit off topic here. Hehe
| |
ishralene09 (1345) | 5 months ago | Do it because it's your right. Teachers should be able to impart a good deal of knowledge to students and should be able to make a good exam to test it. It's the students' right to rate a teacher, as it is part of the evaluation. As for that, I always regard C as a very good starting language. And though it is not necessary to learn C first, learning a good deal of one programming language will make your transition to the other easy. But then you can learn Java easily without learning C at all. I have a lot less knowledge in Java than I do in C, but it proves to be effective knowing C, because one exam of ours turned to be a tracing exam where you trace the code if something went wrong. And I've traced the Java program and did good, and eventually with less knowledge I am able to create a program using Java. If you know Java already, transition in C will be very easy, and transition to C# will be VERY easy, I tell you. Remember that every programming languages has a pro and con, but most of the time only the syntax and other functionality differ. What you can do on pseudo code and flowchart you can do on a programming language, given that the functions permits you to. Note that I'm also a beginner, and not that experienced. Are you somehow interested in game development? Just an off-topic question.

blanne (104) | 5 months ago | Yey! I think you are right. I really will rate her poor when evaluation day comes. I can't wait. Haha. Oh. So it pays to know one programming language before learning another one, is that right? I'm guessing that all programming languages have somewhat the same concepts. They only differ in reserved words or structure or some functions. I'm interested in learning Java. I also heard that C# isn't really that difficult, at least accordning to some people. What's the major difference between C# and C? Anyway, I think one of the reasons why I enrolled for Computer Science was I wanted and was interested in game development. I used to play RPG games but I eventually stopped. And so the interest faded away. Hehe. But if given the opportunity to work and do game development, then I think I would grab it. Why you asked? Is that something you want to pursue?:)
| |
ishralene09 (1345) | 5 months ago | I never stopped playing RPG games, so the aspiration to become one is really important to me. It's those good games that made me think that hey, this is a cool job. And even though a lot of my interest fade away some time(because of the game dev is for math wiz only stuff), I'm still revitalized every time I play a game and feel the complexity of how it's made. Anyways about programming, it's really just like that. It's a matter of the difference and power of the language and learning the general concept can lead you to better heights than just learning a specific programming language, that's why being a software engineer is a very tough job because you have to learn more on the behavior than the code. So learning one and doing a transition is better. Actually, it depends on the power of the language. C is a functional language, but C++ is an upgraded version that gives the C OOP capabilities. C# is more of an event-driven language. Java is a good start really. C#? Put it this way, it's like programming in Java with the power of C in a very easy to work on environment delivered by dotNet. Just with that imagine what C# is like. You'll be amazed. And because it's dotNet environment, migration of codes from C#.Net to others are easy. We did our thesis using ASP.Net having C# as a code-behind. And we did it with minimal knowledge and we're able to pull through with divine intervention. Good luck with your career my friend, and oh to be not so off-topic, I'm also looking forward to that evaluation. You know I do. Heehee.

blanne (104) | 5 months ago | Haha. Thanks for the support my friend. Someday if I have more questions about programming and stuff, I now know who to ask. Thanks for answering all of my questions. I really appreciate it.:)
| |
ishralene09 (1345) | 5 months ago | That's OK. I'm sure a lot of people here are also good and I hope that they eventually will step in our doorsteps. All of those words are based on my experiences. The world of IT is vast, and is improving by the minute, so the best we can do is to live by it and continue to practice the skills so that we survive...heehee. Thanks man. Good luck.

2. maryannemax (10486) | 5 months ago | i do not really care for as long as it's not oral. i love math, science, english, essays, enumerations, etc. i don't get a perfect score but i find myself more confident and comfortable sitting there answering the questions up to what i can remember. but when it comes to oral examinations, i get so nervous. i mumble and most of the time, run out of words to say. i don't have much self confidence when it comes to speaking publicly.

blanne (104) | 5 months ago | Well, good for you. You are pretty much game for any type of exam, as long as it is written. Hehe. You are not alone when it comes to oral exams. Luckily, I only had to try an oral exam once. I discovered that I'm not very good at conversing and expressing my ideas through opening my mouth. When my grade was reflected, I knew I could have done better if only it was a written exam. Thanks for the comment!:)

maryannemax (10486) | 5 months ago | i do try hard and prepare for oral exams. but when i am there, i just get so nervous. it's difficult to think when one is trembling of nervousness. i really hope i can have more self confidence.

blanne (104) | 5 months ago | I feel for you. But for my case, I don't think it's all about the self confidence. It's just that I'm not so good when it comes to talk or voicing out my opinion. I can express more effectively when writing..

4. bryanski (342) | 5 months ago | I hate essays. For one, they consume much of my ink! Another, drains all my energy. I have no problems with writing but I also get tired. That's why I despise essays. I like multiple choice. Less effort. More chance of getting the right answer. I also prefer enumeration and the types. But I guess by resorting to these kind of tests will not really test one's understanding. So, I'll add to my preferred formats of exam Problem Solving. But I hope it won't be a difficult one.

blanne (104) | 5 months ago | Essays are really pain in the a**. And I have to agree with you. The easy kinds of exams do not require much brain activity, so types like problem solving should also be included. And if I were to choose between essay and problem solving? I think I would have to go for the former, even if it kills me to write paragraphs.. Thanks for your comment!

blanne (104) | 5 months ago | You hate multiple choice questions? I never thought some people could actually hate multiple choice type of exam! I personally think this type is a savior, including the likes of true or false and matching type. Thanks for the comment!
