I'll Paddle In It, Love Being Near Or On It But Won't Swim Or Dive In The Sea! |
I would love to go scuba diving but I won't even swim in the sea although I do love to swim but only in a pool. I am not a fearful person but for some reason I won't go into the water. Do you think this stems from seeing Jaws in my childhood? Have I a fear of being under water as I love all activities on, near or above it? Do you go into the water? Have you been diving and if so where and did you enjoy? I love to go out in boats with clear glass bottoms to see the wonders beneath but for some reason I can't bring myself to take the plunge. I live 10 minutes walk from the sea too so I feel I am missing out on so much. Ellie:D

1. Transdisc (16944) | 4 months ago | Hello ellie333:) I don't like to swim in sea water that is not clear, but I do love to swim and dive in clear sea water. I have swam and dived in the Caribbean and Hawaii. Under water is amazing.

ellie333 (5738) | 4 months ago | Hi Transdisc, perhaps here in the UK because the water isn't clear is the reason why perhaps if I could see I would be fine. My daughter went diving when in Fiji and thoroughly enjoyed it but I still can't bring myself too. Ellie:D

Transdisc (16944) | 4 months ago | Yes, I also don't like to swim in sea water in which I can't see. Funnily enough, I don't mind swimming in lake, river, or pond water that isn't clear (as long as it's clean.)

ellie333 (5738) | 4 months ago | I won't swim in lakes either even if clean water, needs to be clear water. Ellie:D

2. TessWhite (1524) | 4 months ago | I am the same way Ellie. My fear comes from a near drowning I had as a child in a lake. Now I'll only swim in a pool where I can see bottom. I live on the coast and love to walk the beach, but you won't find me swimming in those waves.
| |
| |
ellie333 (5738) | 4 months ago | Hi TessWhite, Now you mention it I fell into a lock when young and flared jeans were the fashion and even though I could swim the weight of the wet denim was dragging me down and someone had to dive in a nd save me so perhaps it stems from there as I remember not being able to see either and being very frightened. I just so love the sea and being near it though. Ellie:D

3. jillhill (7260) | 4 months ago | I have not been scuba diving....but I have snorkled in the Pacific ocean off of Hawaii....the gulf of Mexico in Florida and in the Bahama's.....it's so much fun! I do love the water and am like a fish in it.....I hope someday you'll overcome your fear but since I can't overcome my fear of heights who am I to give advice! LOL

ellie333 (5738) | 4 months ago | Hi Jill, I wonder if it is because we don't have clear water off the UK and if I was in a clear water area I would be able to. I like to se what is around and beneath me I suppose. My daughter went diving when in Fiji and loved it and living so close to the sea I really wish I could experience more than I do, I have tried but I will get to about my waist and some seaweed or something will wrap itself around my leg and I'm outta there LOL. 4. p1kef1sh (3609) | 4 months ago | Ellie I just love the sea. I have been scuba diving in Italy, but I've never been in a glass bottom boat. I have seen boats though glass bottoms though. Pink elephants too!! LOL.

ellie333 (5738) | 4 months ago | Hi P1kef1sh, I love the sea too in fact it was answering one of your discussions that got me thinking about it ans I love being on the water, near it and will paddle but won't go into it, very strange eh! I saw an elephant walking up the road once and saw a few people do a double take but the winter quarters for a circus were just up the road so I was okay with it, now if it had been pink......LOL. ellie333 (5738) | 4 months ago | Hi Tessa, I think maybe I will need to go abroad to clear water as I'm fine going under water in a pool but not in the sea. I have tried to and will get as far as maybe my waist and suddenly some seaweed will tangle round my legs and thats it I'm running back to the beach. My daughter loves diving and I would trust her 100%, perhaps I will go to a dive school as they train in pools initially to get me comfortable and they take the plunge as I have always wanted to. 6. Goodie123 (7319) | 4 months ago | I do not like to swim in the ocean either Ellie. With me it is the fact that the water is not clear. I do not like being unable to see what is lurking in the water.
| |
| |
ellie333 (5738) | 4 months ago | Hi Goodie, that is the exact reason why I don't but I have just set myself a goal to overcome this fear by next summer, I will train to dive in a schooled pool and book a holiday somewhere with clear waters and go for it! Sounds like a plan eh! Ellie:D

7. PearlGrace (1721) | 4 months ago | Hi ellie333. I do go in to the ocean. And it is such a rush! I love it! I swim parallel with the shore, about 10 or 15 feet out, and it is a trip! Hope you will try it. I have never been SCUBA diving. But I do have a cheap little snorkel set that I practice with in the pool. I always tell my husband that we will go snorkeling in the ocean someday. But, we haven't gone yet. Strangely, it is actually difficult to let your body breathe when you are under water. I find that I just want to keep holding and holding my breath, even though I have that tube thing in my mouth that leads to above the water's surface. I know it is going to allow me to take in air, but it's still difficult to let myself breathe. The next time we go to Englewood Beach to swim in the ocean, I'm gonna try to remember my cheap little snorkeling gear to see what I can see along the edge of the ocean. Hm, I do not know if it is a fear you have, do you actually feel fear when you go to the ocean's edge? If you have several friends who like to go to the beach, perhaps you could plan a morning or afternoon to go with all of them and have plenty of friends for support and safety nearby. Good luck, ellie333. Sometimes, when we embrace our fears, great adventures lie ahead.

ellie333 (5738) | 4 months ago | Hi PearlGrace, I have actually tried to go out into the sea but here in the UK the sea isn't clear and I like to be able to see, I get about as far as my waist and then a piece of seaweed will tangle itself around my legs and I will freak and run back out of the water. I have set myselg a goal though to save, train and book a holiday in an area with clear safe waters to go diving in by next summer, so I will overcome it as I enjoy all other aspects of the sea. Ellie:D

PearlGrace (1721) | 4 months ago | Super idea, setting a goal. Oh, I think I'd do the same thing if something wrapped around my leg underwater and I couldn't actually see it. That would be creepy. The water down here where we live is crystal blue in the ocean. If I don't go too far out, I can pretty much see some of what's beneath the surface of the water. That is great that you are planning to get some water training. It's smart to get training from "experts" in their fields. Can't wait to hear about that trip!
| |
ellie333 (5738) | 4 months ago | So not just me then, I think it is because the UK waters are so unclear and some beaches do have lots of seaweed and once it starts tangling round thats it i'm outta there! Clear water I should be okay with so goal is set and will attempt eh! Ellie:D

8. gemini_rose (9073) | 4 months ago | I am the same as you, and mine stems from Jaws and jellyfish. I am really reluctant to paddle in it too unless I can see the bottom of it, and that is because I am frit to death of jellyfish stinging me. I can swim in a pool like a fish, will go under the water do handstands and all sorts, yet try and get me in the sea and its "not a chance". I would love to be able to walk on the beach though everyday and smell the sea air, something so beautiful about the smell of the air by the sea.

ellie333 (5738) | 4 months ago | Oh Gemini That is where I am just so lucky having the sea so close by, I have been in as far as my waist before now but then suddenly some seaweed will get tangled round my leg and thats it I will freak and run out again, I like to see where I am swimming and what is around me. I have set myself a goal though to go to a dive school and to save for a holiday in clear safe waters by next summer and swim and dive. I need to overcome this one. Ellie:D

ellie333 (5738) | 4 months ago | Hi Checapricorn, I am like your sister at the moment, my waist is as far as I have been and then I'll get some seaweed around my leg and run out again not to go back in, I think if the water here in the UK was clear and I could see what was around me I might go in. I have set myself a goal to overcome this by next summer and to book a holiday where there are clear waters that I can swim in. Ellie:D
