I seem to have the world's shortest attention span and I hate it!

I can't sit still and do something for more than five minutes without getting fidgety and distracted. It's really difficult to get anything done!

I wonder what causes this kind of thing, maybe too much time on the Internet in front of constantly flicking pages and too much TV?

Still reading? lol Good!

Is there anyway to improve a short attention span? I'd like to be able to see projects through to the end! How do you improve patience?

I have known people with short attention spans. It can be frustrating to say the least. Have you had this for a long time? It sounds a little like ADHD. I am just trying to be helpful because I have been around it in my life.
It does seem like you need a little more patience. You could possibly see a doctor and discuss your issues with him. It could possibly help you. happy

I wondered about ADHD but didn't want to be a hypochondriac and self-diagnose. I'm a bit shy about going to my GP because I've got so many other things wrong with me that I didn't want to add to the pile. I should be changing my doctor soon anyway, so maybe I should bring it up. blush

I don't know much about ADHD. Are there triggers that bring it on or is it something you're born with?

I have been around children with add or adhd. I believe it could easily be inherited. It can be managed but then again you still might want to see that doctor.

Yea, I have ADHD too. That sounds like what you have. There is medication and diet changes that you can make. I just go with my. I have learned to train myself to stay on one thing and try my best not to interrupt others conversations, which is also something ADHD people do. You know people like me the way I am and as long as my husband can keep putting up with me then things are okay.

I interrupt other people when they're talking and I hate it when I do it. It's so rude and I feel really bad about it, but I feel like I just need to say something at that moment!

Are there any basic diet changes that you could recommend to me?

I've found when I settle down at the later on in the day and get somewhat tired I can then sit still and do things. It works best when its dark as it makes me more relaxed and I can drink something like a coke and it won't give me the jitters as it would if it were daylight. Your probably naturally hyper. It seems like alot of people have short attention spans of all the people i've dealt with. As a matter of fact I think its getting more common in society paticularly the U.S. as things are fast paced as it is.

People are at their most creative and productive at different times of the day. I think I'm more of an evening person too. I don't have caffeine then though, because I wouldn't sleep!

It is certainly not easy to break out of the "impatient habit" and I have been consulted by many clients with this problem. Meditation is powerful but some people I see are not prepared to "face their demons" and devote a twenty period a day to it. It is not a question of finding your way around impatience, but usually one has to go right through it and out the other side. Sitting in zazen meditation that I practice brings the impatience to the surface, but once you just sit with it and let it be, it begins to get less and less. After a while, when person confronts these demons, they do lessen and the person begins to practice mindfulness in all things that are done each day. Do you know what, I am exactly the same! But I always have been, I am absolutely terrible for being distracted and fidgety. I never get anything complete, I just get fed up of it and move on to something else. I really have to knuckle down and get things completed so the only way is to just make myself do it. I try to offer myself a reward, so if I get something done then I get a treat! Do not know if it will work but it is worth a try.

You may have something called adult ADD. I can get fidgety also, but drawing seems to focus me, and so does writing. I can't just sit around and do nothing. The Internet does help me not to fidget though...sometimes... then other times it doesn't help me at all.

The Internet seems to be the only thing I can focus on. Probably because we can keep flicking to new pages. I wonder if it makes my patience for other things worse though! I've had a look online for information about adult ADD, but so far the only help I can find on offer is medication and I'm already on so much that I don't want to put more pills into my system. sad

I'm not much of an artist, but there is a comfort to drawing and painting, even if it's no good. I think it's really theraputic. I used to love writing, but I don't have the patience for it these days. I need to work hard on disciplining myself! Thanks.

Its a problem at least two people I know have.
My boss is one of them. Talking to him about anything is a problem because his attention shifts all the time.
The other is a friend who says he can't read books because his attention is not constant.
I don't know if this is a curable problem.
I guess a pro would be better able to advise.

I love reading, but can't do it for long periods of time. I have to break it up and set myself goals or my attention wanders far too quickly, even with a really good book!

Phaedra - hi. You might try getting up and walking outside or at least around the house, every ten minutes or so if you think you're hyper from too much stimulation and demanding your brain run 100% all the time.

I lose concentration in the middle of a sentence, or forget how to spell a simple word. The harder I try, the more the word slips away, until I lost the meaning altogether.

I mentioned my frustration to my doctor and he prescribed a stimulant medicine and my brain works much better. I know many people get all upset with people who take medication. They think we are weak, or something.

I don't like the meds, but without the medicine I sit and stare at my computer.

I don't mind having six or seven projects going at one time. I think its stimulating and interesting. I get bored.

It's not so much that I'm hyper (I suffer from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome), it's more that my mind can't focus on one thing for more than a few minutes (or seconds in some case!) without getting distracted. It's a bit of a conundrum!

I'm sorry to hear that your case seems so severe. I'm apprehensive about going to the doctor and possibly being prescribed a new medication because I'm already taking so many pills for other things that I practically rattle! I wish I didn't have to put so many chemicals into my body.

If your a mom it's pretty common anyways. LOL! I am a bit like this as well. I have found a couple of things that help me. I have found the my mind wanders UNLESS my hands are busy. Say my man wants me to sit and watch a movie, which it pretty difficult for me, I may knit or something like that. One of my friend's does beadwork. If I can keep my hands occupied then I can relax more, for some reason. Part of it, for me, is being a kinesthetic learner, look that one up and see if you are one.

Another thing that helps is taking natural source Omega 3, 6, and 9. I don't do chemicals or drugs. I belong to an email group that this is used and recommended by parents of children with ADD and ADHD. It helps them to concentrate.

Actually writing is one of the few things that WILL hold my attention for a while as both my mind AND hands are kept busy! It's very soothing to me, has a calming effect.

I'm not a mum (although sometimes my partner acts like a little boy and I feel like one! wink)

I can't sit and watch the TV without doing something else at the same time or I get bored and irritable, even if I'm enjoying what I'm watching. I do embroidery usually or use the laptop at the same time.

I'd love to learn to knit properly and I started to learn the basics but my problem is that when I mess up slightly or drop a stitch, I can't figure out how to fix it and have to rip up half of what I've done to try and fix it. If only I had a teacher who could show me! I got fed up of knitting because of this unfortunately.

its true. when i was student i had also the same problem. i had to stay calm. i always had bad results becasue i couldnt give my affort to studies. after a long time i gained the problem. the main thing is that you have top concentrate for a long time. and then you will get the job done.
