Others preventing you from practicing singing |
|
I was wondering whether others have the same trouble as I do. I find the only way I can practice my scales and other warm ups is if I go for a walk and put the lessons on my mp3 player. We do have a spinet organ and I could use that, but it is also in the computer room and so are our two computers. The gist is that my husband listens to Audible on the computer and he does not use the headphones, he turns up the speakers. And I do need to play the organ (I have it set at piano) to check to see if I have the right sound. It is heavy so hard to move and he did not want it in the living room. I know that I can go to the church because they have a piano, but it is not free all the time. By the way the speakers being on on my husband's computer also does not help my myLotting or my writing. So does anyone have the same problem as I do of having your singing warmups and practices limited based on others wanted to do something else at the same time>> I know I can get a bit of practice when I take a walk, but I have a longer range than the examples given.

1. nanciem (396) | 5 months ago | Hi Suspenseful! I myself do not have this problem, as I cannot sing to save my own life! Trust me that is a scary sound LOL. But I can offer some advice. Is it possible that you and your husband can set a schedule? Maybe arrange a certain time that you can practice? It's got to be 50/50. My neice has such a wonderful voice, it was not always practical nor easy when she wanted to practice. I would have her come to my home and practice. Take it from someone who cannot, not even one note, sing at all. Don't let anything stand in your way. Maybe you can come to some sort of compromise? Good luck.. keep practicing (when you can)!

suspenseful (14143) | 5 months ago | I have tried to arrange a schedule but that is the problem, he wants to listen when he wants to. There are times when the only time he does not listen to Audible is when there is something good on Tv, and when you are listening to Audible for when the novel is finished, it makes it hard I mean I can read a chapter a day, but he has to listen to the whole twenty or more chapters or sixty until it is over. One time, he got up around ten (he used to work afternoons) and I had to bring lunch to him because he was still listening. He even did not do any exercises until he had to go to bed. He read the whole novel in one day and did not get finished until two in the morning. So you see what I am up against.

nanciem (396) | 5 months ago | I can understand what you are going through. Doesn't he think it is beautiful when you sing? He has to meet you half way, it is so not right for someone to stop doing what they enjoy due to accommodating another.. make sense? Maybe you just have to tell him "Dude I am practicing right now". Please never stop due to someone else, and I hate to say this.. but if it does take you going for a walk to practice your scale... Walk across the world! Alot of people are not blessed with such talents, mine happens to be art, I would never let anyone take that away from me.. Sing, Sing, Sing! Do that for yourself, don't ever waste a talent! Hugs and good luck! Belt one out for me:)

suspenseful (14143) | 5 months ago | I am not good at belting, but I am a whiz at classical. So i will do more singing when I walk. Now if only I could remember the words to the song. Well maybe I will hum. Or they will have to listen to Ommi bambino caro all the time.

suspenseful (14143) | 5 months ago | That's all right, but it could be used for learning a new language, like you have to practice aloud and you do not have a lap top computer so you can take it to another room.

suspenseful (14143) | 5 months ago | You know your last suggestion made sense. My husband refuses to wear headphones, but if I practice the scales and then use that as my guide it would help. I have done it in a limited fashion. I am not that good at playing, more like singing, especially when it comes to four or more sharps or flats, but I can try.

suspenseful (14143) | 5 months ago | I have to use my headphones when listening to my classical music. I love listening to novels, but I know that others may not. But I do wish that I could practice singing more and not just when I am going for a walk. I then have to be careful there is no one around who does not look at me like I am out of my mind. When I am humming a tune or singing it, it is all right, but if I am doing a b c d e f or a a a, etc. then they might think different.

suspenseful (14143) | 5 months ago | I do wish I had a lap top so I could go in the other room or a portable keyboard player. I guess I will have to go back to recording some scales and appegios and doing it from there. And I have to practice a piece for the Christmas concert anyway. I tried to get him to use the headphone, but he does not want to. And right now he is still asleep so I cannot do any singing practice or language learning now anyway.

6. Willowlady (9144) | 5 months ago | Hope you don't think this too funny however I have heard of folks singing in the shower. I know you cannot shower all day but for some quality time that might with the moisture in the air be good for your chords. Walking is good, maybe practice with fellow singers in a garage or nice large home somewhere where the sounds will really reverberate. A bit of creativity is worth it and I wish you all the luck. Let us know if you get to do a public appearance.

suspenseful (14143) | 5 months ago | I do sing in the shower, but it does no good if you want to make sure you are not singing off tune. For that I need the piano or organ. I do not have enough to buy a good portable keyboard (I can sing three octaves) that have 61 or more keys. And when I am practicing my scales, I want to see if they are correct. So I have to match my voice to the notes. I can practice at church, but right now it is holiday, the main accompanist goes to the other church, and the other main accompanist got married recently. I hope I can talk to one of them when we start choir practice. And I hope it works out.

suspenseful (14143) | 5 months ago | I will think of something. It will just take time. I will have to search the net for some programs that I can load onto my mp3 player or record some myself.
