The Golden age of computers! | | Let's jump ahead in time from the introduction of the gigantic, two story house sized, reel to reel computers that needed about two hours, 1.21 "Gigawatts" of electricity and 10,000 punch cards to calculate the answer to "2+2" and begin talking about the modern computer design we have in our homes today. I can remember that home computers needed to be booted from the initial DOS screen and it took about a half hour and the correct string of commands that needed to be retyped about ten times because you would miss a backslash or a letter just to get to the program screen you wanted to work with. It didn't take long before there were smaller monitors and giant flat towers available for any consumer that was willing to dish out $3000 - $5,000 for a 233 MHz microprocessor, a gigantic two megabyte hard drive, a 5 1/2" floppy drive, and even the new modem capabilities that will allow you to link to another computer that had the same features which was about 3 in the world at the time. During the early stages of marketing home PCs, It was a machine that people that could afford it would brag about as if it was the end of all technology. Now that we have become use to computer technology having a shelf-life of about twenty minutes after it is purchased, I can look back and laugh at those "brag about technology" people. I still remember dial-up in it's early development was considered a really fast communications technology and after just waiting only ten minutes to make a connection only to be dropped when a telemarketer calls you to pitch aluminum siding for your dog's house. With the progress of the cable connection, DSL and now wireless T-1 connectivity and FIOS, do we really need to get billions of pieces of information in a nano second to go any faster? Today's computers are extremely fast and efficient, but I can speak for all of us when I say still want more added to this already maxed out technology. I guess just being people in general, it's in our nature to believe we can have something that can be much better. One of these days our technology is going to be so advanced that we are going to be sitting in our living rooms reading a book or watching the "Boob Tube" and someone out of the blue will drop us a random "e-brain" message loaded with thousands of advertisements right into our thoughts without the use of a computer at all. Do you think computer technology is advancing too quickly? What other technologies do you think can possibly be added to the modern home computer?

I think it would be nice to have a computer that could transport me from Toronto to Phoenix, or transport my husband from Phoenix to Toronto without the cost of gas or flights, and without having to wait 10 hours.... might not be a bad idea. Technology can advance as far as it wants for all I care, just as long as the every day user has a choice in how advanced they want their own technology to be. If I don't want to receive e-Brain advertizements, I shouldn't have to, but if I subscribe to the service, then I will. It should be about individual choice;.

I saw a news report not long ago that a digital camera was wired into a blind woman's brain so that she can see images like those with normal sight. It is good that her sight was artificially restored by this cyborg technology, but what will it inspire for the future human to computer applications? (rhetorical question)

I think the only downside to computer technology advancing as fast as it does, is that it's difficult to keep on top of the changes. I think it's exciting to contemplate what the future holds for computer technology, but I think one thing that is kind of frightening when you really think about it is the possibility that someday computers, as in the movie TERMINATOR, may become "self aware". I, for one, have my doubts about computers ever advancing that far. But, who is to say, with all certainty, that it can never happen. I mean, think of all the technological advances and inventions that have come about, even after people said it would never happen. And now, recently, I saw a story on the news about some scientists somewhere putting an animal brain or something like that into a small robot. It may have been for scientifically beneficial reasons, and it may seem innocent enough right now, but how long before that "technology" advances, possibly, beyond what we could have ever imagined. When and where will we ever draw the line? Or will we? I'm afraid not.

mrghill (1603) | 3 months ago | Artificial intelligence is a "self-awareness" technology that has already been applied in more sophisticated computers. We just haven't been stupid enough to install it inside an indestructible and dangerous casings that we can't hit the "off" switch on yet. I think that when men are capable of cloning other men and the use of stem cells from fetuses can be used to cure major defects in fully formed humans, we have decided not to only cross the line, but ignore that the line was ever there. Thanks for Responding.

mrghill (1603) | 3 months ago | I just saw a commercial for a large flat screen that is also a home PC. From the image of the product in the commercial, you could never tell it was also a PC hanging on your living room wall. I suppose next will be a computer that is also a microwave and refrigerator.
