 Being part owner of a daycare there are some pretty picky parents that my business partner and I have been dealing with. I don't blame the parents sometimes because when it came to having my son in a daycare when he was younger I looked for the best as well.
My friend and I had an issue last week and that made us come to a decision to let one child go due to her mother's rudeness.
When we first started our daycare business we held interviews to meet parents and their children just to see how the child liked it and to see if we thought the children would fit in. We took non-refundable deposits from the parents and that was for holding the child's spot plus it went as credit.
One lady used up her credit and had her daughter with us for the last two months up until last week. In our policy we ask for 50% of their weekly fees and notice so she did that. Also all payments are due every friday in advance due to one mother using us for childcare then ending up not paying so we had that in our policy where everyone had to pay on fridays in advance for the following week.
This one lady always paid us on Tuesdays. When she came back from her vacation, she gave us her weekly fees on Tuesday which was actually due last friday. When we told her that her payment was due on Friday as our policy stated, she began stating that she wasn't making two payments for one week. She also had the idea of that she was one week ahead for payments which was false due to her mistake about thinking that her daughter didn't show up the first week and used up her credit.  Talk about a pain in the butt!!
She then continued telling us that we'de better be careful seeing that we weren't licenced and if anyone were to walk in they could have us shut down. We have no more than 6 kids a day and the licencing place is okay with this! Especually when there is two of us supervising the children.
She then told us that her husband was coming over with her to straighten this whole thing out and that made us feel terrible and intimidated. My friend completely disagreed with this because we have our business in her home and she felt that it would make her feel intimidated in her own home so she was quite upset, as I was too.
When this lady finally understood that she was not ahead one week of payment and realized we were right, she told us that her husband was coming by with the money and we ended up refusing it because we felt that this lady was very vendictive and we also felt threatened so we came to our decision to not have her back.
I guess my question is this... have you ever found out someone could be so vendictive where you just wanted to avoid them? Did you feel that they would hurt you?

Thanks for your comment. I also believe she was hinting to us that she was going to get back at us. So far it's been nice without her coming around. In the mornings she would stay with her daughter and usually that makes it worse for the children when it comes to saying bye in the morning. So basically she would work up her daughter and give her seperation anxiety.
Some children are very difficult to calm down. | |

I can't believe she would resort to threatening you two with her husband's presence... as if that would have made the situation any better or resolved the situation any. She is supposed to be an adult and I think that what you two did was perfectly reasonable.
Its scary when someone decides to show their true colors and they aren't very pretty... but as I see it shying away from them lets them think that they are winning. In the end karma is a%#@&* and she will get what is coming to her... that much I do know.

Thanks for your comment. You are definitly right about how we did our homework. I believe she was trying to get a free hand out and we are not tolerating that at all. I'm sure there are other daycare providers which take payments at the end of the week but we don't and it's something that she knew and signed our policy. When we had a whole month to prepare our daycare we did a lot of phonecalls to everything and everyone involved and found that it was and is legal to be unlicenced. At the start we thought we would work on becoming licenced but we find we're doing just fine as we are and have decided to remain that way.
The only question that came up for my business partner and I was.... if we are not licenced, can we still make a policy? I did it anyway and so far there's been no questions about it. | |

 highflyingxangel (6575) | 3 months ago |  You're running a business, regardless of being licensed or not so I don't think there is anything wrong with having policies. If you don't have some sort of policy in place, you're really not running a good business in my opinion and that can end up getting you into trouble later on if you don't have any guidelines.

| 5. sid556 (5621) | 4 weeks ago |  I used to do daycare also and I would have done the same exact thing as you. I very rarely had a problem with the kids but certain parents...oh yes. They can ruin your name and ruin your business. If you are questioned at all by the state...even if it is declared "unfounded"...it is on your record for 7 years that you were questioned. I put a lot of time and work into the kids. I expected to get paid each week. I had one lady who, unfortunately was a friend of mine that went weeks without paying me. It was so tough because I cared deeply about her and was very attached to her children but I finally had to end it. I just couldn't afford it. I was feeding her kids. Like you, I was unlicensed so I could only have so many. I knew she was hurting financially but so was I. When her kids got headlice and she didnt treat them, causing them to spread thru my home not just once but several times that is when I finally ended it. I had even bought the stuff and done her kids hair but she had to do her own and did not. You did the right thing. This lady should have trusted you enough to at least sit down and talk in a civil manner with you.

Well that seemed to fade away shortly after. She basically screwed herself over because after that she had no one responsible enough to watch her daughter.
We just figured that we would rather not get into something deeper with her because of her level of mantality.
