Life sucks today and will tomorrow too... I'd love to go to sleep and never wake

I would have thought after all that time that the debt would have been written off by the place by now. Is the letter you got from the place itself that you owe the money to or from a collection agency? There are some collection agencies who get ahold of old debt accounts and try to get the money and the place who you had the debt with never sees it since they have already written it off. I sure hope it all works out for you and I am sure it will. Please keep us informed. I sure wish there was something I could do to help you out.

I'm so sorry Oreo..I have been there in the trying to make ends meet dept. but have never been sued..I couldn't pay some bills and just let them go and even though i got letters and phone calls..I let them know i just couldn't pay..after many years of this they finally let me alone..knowing I wasn't able to pay..yes they can threaten you but i can't believe a $500. bill would go to 1100. and them sue you?? especially after 5 yrs...something is wrong here cause after 7 yrs its off your credit rating..well in the sense of them letting it go..it may never leave but its now against the law for them to harass you..why was there a Lawyer involved? By Law if you give them $5.00 a month and they know thats all you can afford they have to accept it..then of course they will get tired of it but you should stick with that and see them squirm and try to settle with you..they still can't squeese anymore from you but at least you are letting them know you can't do anymore..

sorry to hear this about you. i too, have no knowledge aboutthings like this but for me you need to communicate well with them for they know that you are not running away from it and is willing to negotiate and to ask maybe for an extention. just let them be aware that you will do your very best to pay for it but nit within 30 days. i think you can do that.... thou i am not sure. i havent experience anything like this before but for me the best way is to face them and to promise that you will do your very best to pay back. hope it ends well. i will pray for you.

Oh dear Oreo - I too feel your pain and know that feeling of wanting to just go to sleep and not wake up. But dear you know that's not an option. I can't say I have an answer for you but first please know that you will be in my thoughts and prayers until this is solved and you are back to yourself. Next, contact the people ASAP and explain the situation to them - I one time had a similar situation and the more open and honest you are with them the more willing they are to work with you. Also I don't know about your area but here we have agencies that all they do is deal with these situations - I signed up with one several years back when I was have problems and they took care of everything. They contacted the debtors and arranged payment plans, they helped to budget my money so that I could still 'live' but got payments low enough that I could handle them. They were in my book a life saver at that time - just the stress of not knowing what to do or see a light at the end of the tunnel was killing me.

That is a small amount to live on. I still work but got forced to retire after 30 years of service. I do not have a cell and my home is paid for. I get NO monthly pension I just have my 401K and will get ss in 3 years. I struggle at times and I really don't know what to tell you but I do care. I now just work part time as I am a caregiver to 2 family members.

Ohhhhh, Oreo. I know how you feel. I've been there. When I went to court for the judgment, the complaintant's attorney met me in the hallway and struck up a payment deal and I never had to go in the courtroom before the judge. . .

You need to call their attorney and let them know you are on a fixed income, and maybe you can make a payment arrangement. Tell them exactly how much you can afford to send them each month. See if they will accept the deal and not take you to court.

You don't want a judgment on your record.

If you have an attorney, it would be best to get advice from him/her; but, that costs money, too.

The bill collectors have frightening tactics and I have felt the same as you. But, if you can work out a deal, then stick to the payments, you'll make it eventually! You could even ask them if they would take away some of the interest. They would probably say no, but it is worth asking.

Bankruptcy costs so much by the time you pay the attorney and court costs, you might have well paid that $1,100.

Good luck, I hope they will let you make a payment plan that you can afford. Once you get over halfway there, you will feel like a turtle poking her little head back out of the shell into the sunlight! Hang in there, you can do this. Also, read Suzi Orman's books about women and finances.

I wish I could help you on this one. I would guess is you can answer by calling them and see what happens. If you do negotiate with them and start making payments, make sure that no fees or anything else will be added on to it.


I know, how you feel, I have been struggling and my 10 year old van needs more work then both of my total paychecks in a month. And if I don't fix it I can't get to work, but if i fix it, I don't have money to live.

I am so sorry this has happened..I understand how hard it is to live on a fixed income and how hard this must be on your outlook....but think positive...tomorrow is another day and once you sleep on it the whole situation might not seem so big. Good luck!

oreocookie3 I am sorry you feel so bad but dont ever give up,I feel that way sometimes myself but I wake up get up and keep on struggling.You can file bankruptcy by not paying any of your bills and giving that money to a lawyer,you should contact a bankruptcy lawyer and talk with them to see if this is a option.You never said what kind of credit you got behind on but if it is credit card you should be able to get out of all the added charges.Just write to the place the summons came from and tell them your circustances and that you live on social security. This place has probably already wrote the loan off on their taxes after 5 years. Good Luck to you and you will be in my prayers.
