I, along with many of you, I'm sure, had been holding my breath while earnestly praying that New Orleans would not be devastated again as it was during Katrina in 2005. Thankfully, the damage has not been as great as some had predicted it would be. I stayed up most of the night listening to callers who phoned in to a radio talk show who had decided to hunker down and wait out the storm. One man who lived very near the Gulf of Mexico said that he felt reasonably secure because his home was built upon 25 foot stilts! Others said they had reinforced their homes with such things as steel shutters -which makes a lot of sense if you're going to live in an area that is given to these kinds of storms. I am glad that the people of New Orleans were prepared for this storm and everything went as smoothly as it did. Many of the people were just beginning to recover from Katrina. Many were still living in the FEMA trailers. Since the ability of the levees to stand up to a really strong surge from any storm is vital, what measures do you think should be taken in the area to prevent future disasters?

My husband and I were just talking about this. On the news we were watching, they were talking about water going over one of the levees and how they still weren't sure they would hold.

Personally, since this entire city is below sea level, I think there should be no rebuilding going on until those levees are secure enough to keep water from the city during a hurricane. Period.

The cost of just transporting people in and out of New Orleans everytime a hurricane might hit is going to be high. They might do better to put that money into assuring that the town is safe and secure.

I've lived on the Gulf Coast - in FL and TX - and I know what hurricanes can do. I've visited New Orleans, but knowing that the town is below sea level...you couldn't pay me enough to live there.

Glad to hear that it was not as bad as they thought. I love New Orleans, went there on my honey moon three years ago before Katrina.

As far as rebuilding securing the city goes, they need to put some money into revamping those levees and they need to have a real study done by an expert to tell them what needs to be done and then they need to do. They desperately need to stop half-completing the levee work.

I am very glad that things did not get as bad as they thought. Hopefully everyone can get things cleaned up and back to normal soon. I am not sure there is much more you can do. The storms are just getting worse and worse.
