Morning or evening - which is the best time to water your garden? |
|
People in my locality are quite stern about it. "You water plants in the morning," they say. They don't give reasons. It is to be accepted as "truth" without questions. I did read in a gardening website that it is better to water the garden in the morning. But, what difference does it really make? In what way is watering the garden in the morning better than watering the garden in the evening? When do you water your garden? Sometimes, I water my garden in the evenings and, sometimes, in the morning. Cheers and happy mylotting

snowberries (214) | 3 months ago | I agree with you jammyt, especially in summer, it is best to water in the evening, that way the water does not evaporate while the sun is out, giving the plants alot more time to absorb the water.

2. gyaneshwarrao (1777) | 3 months ago | Gardening is a very good hobby. It keeps us active and fresh. We will be with nature at least for some time spending time to keep the place clean. And as plants need water, this can be taken in the evening leisurely.I feel this is the best time for spending time as the evening becomes cool and our mind also is tuned to do this.

3. Goodie123 (7286) | 3 months ago | I think it is best to water our gardens late in the afternoon early evening. The harsh sun is no longer out to dry the water up. Watering early evening gives the plants a chance to soak the moisture. If you watered in the morning before the sun rises it would be the same.

5. sudiptacallingu (3400) | 3 months ago | Even I have always seen people water their plants in the early morning. Sometimes in the peak of summer when the plants dry out during the day, water is given in the evening after sundown. The main reason I think is that photosynthesis is done during the day and so the plants need as much water in the soil as possible while at night most probably they ‘sleep’ so they don’t need the watering. Then if you water the plants in the afternoon or evening, the heat during the day and the cool water does not go well and plants suffer ‘sunstroke’. Also I heard that we should not water during the daytime as the drops of water act like prisms thru which when sunlight passes, its intensity is magnified and the heat generated might burn the leaves. So its better to water in the morning when the temperature of the plant is at par with the environment.

6. James72 (3509) | 3 months ago | I used to have the same debate with my neighbours. Personally it makes sense to me to water first thing in the morning. A good soaking will take the water below the soil so evaporation is no major issue; and watering at night whilst having temperatures drop with plants and leaves still wet may not be the best thing.

7. ellie333 (5663) | 3 months ago | Hi Positveminded, I am not really much of a gardener myself but all I know is hat I water mine once the sun has gone down or before it is up. I have heard you should never water when the sun is out so a bit like you really in that sometimes I water in the evening, sometimes in the morning. Ellie:D

8. leeloo (206) | 3 months ago | I don't think there is a set system, a friend told me to water flowers in the evening in summer and in the morning in the winter, the reason being that in summer due to evaporation less water gets to the roots and into the earth if watered during the day and during winter if a plant has too much humidity it turns to frost and if it is cold enough the ice can damage the plant stems and roots thus killing it. Another friend though only waters her flowers in the morning as she says that in this way she can see if the earth is dry and only water when needed. Everyone has their own way and both have beautiful gardens so whatever works, works.

10. kangallo (1608) | 3 months ago | Personally, I feel it would be better to water the plants in the evening because then, there is a gap of twelve hours of night in between. Thus the water will reach the plants in a systematic manner. If you water the plants in the morning, there will be heat afterwards and the water will be sucked up by the heat of the sun.
