Dealing with earwax |
|
Most of us manually remove earwax regularly. But healthcare professionals say that the earwax is a water soluble mixture of secretions produced outside the ear canal. And this mixture serves an important protective function for the ear and shouldn't be removed unless it is causing symptoms or interfering with assessments of the ear. I remember my father telling me the same thing years ago (after being told by a doctor) but I didn't believe him (till I read this article a few days ago). Apparently, the removal of the wax can cause problems with the wax being pushed in and causing infection and can lead to hearing loss. Do you regularly clean out the wax from your ears or let it build up to protect the insides of your ear?

1. p1kef1sh (3483) | 3 months ago | I stick a piece of sterilised cloth onto a wire and push it straight through from one ear to the other, pulling the dirty end out of the opposite ear. No problems and no infections!! In reality I only collect what hits the end of my finger. I am fortunate in that my ears are not very waxy anyway. I am quite sure that your information is good though. Poking your fingers in simply pushes the wax deeper into your ears where it can compound and infect the ear canal.

SViswan (3855) | 3 months ago | lol...nothing dirty between the ears! I just read an article on that in the newspaper. My dad is partially deaf in one ear with all the 'cleaning' he did through the ears and the doctor told him this little piece of information long back...which he passed on to me...but I thought it was silly and continued to clean my ears. Now, I'm wondering whether I should stop. The article said the wax was there for a reason and we needn't clean it at all unless it was causing a problem.

SViswan (3855) | 3 months ago | Everyday?? My dad's paritally deaf in one ear with all the cleaning he did! I clean out my children's ears every week and am very organized about it too. I don't think I can go without cleaning my ears either...but now I'm wondering if it's a good thing or not...and if I should just let it stay till it irritates me (which will be the case in a few days)

4. CinderInMySoul (4011) | 3 months ago | well the wax IS there for a purpose. and according to doctors and nurses you arent supposed to insert anything smaller than your elbow into your ear canal (lol thats what they said i swear!) i have an ex that use to be fanatic about getting the wax out of his ear, he would use a q-tip like 3 times a day. and YES he eventually got a nasty ear infection, and the fluid/wax that started to drain out of his ear was totally digusting and looked bloody! i regularly clean the out edge of my ear canal with a q-tip, but never stick it INSIDE the canal.

SViswan (3855) | 3 months ago | lol..that's funny...nothing smaller than your elbow. I guess I should stop cleaning inside the ear and just stick to the outside. I just hope I haven't caused any damage to my children's ears with all the cleaning. My little one had a very bad ear infection for 3 weeks....I hope it wasn't the result of all the cleaning.

goodnightmoon (1492) | 3 months ago | DDr. Oz (on Oprah) has said that before, "You shouldn't insert anything smaller than your elbow." He didn't provide alternative ways to clean our ears though, so I don't know how much help that statement was. I have to clean my ears, I just feel gross if I don't. So I use a Q-tip, but I'm as careful as I can not to damage my ear drums. Unless I get an alternative way, I don't plan on stopping.

6. sudiptacallingu (3400) | 3 months ago | Hi Sandhya, I usually don’t interfere with nature and have never had an ear infection (touch wood). But long time back, my left ear was badly damaged during a phone conversation…you know I was talking intently and then suddenly from somewhere on the other side, this high pitched metallic sound was like a shaft of pain thru my ear and I literally fell down. My friend was of course oblivious to it and it did not want to get her worried so I said nothing but since then this left ear has been troubling me. Its not a regular ache, but I cant take loud noises or high-pitched tones and I use the earwax cleaner about once a month otherwise the ear tends to feel heavy from inside and starts throbbing.

7. James72 (3529) | 3 months ago | I do clean out my ears every now and then with a cotton bud. Yes it can be very dangerous if you do it too often or stick the cotton bud too far in your ear. Especially when it comes to cleaning kids ears. I know of people that ocassionally go to a Doctor and have the wax syringed out with some warm liquid mix or something? They have said that aferwards it felt like they had supersonic hearing! lol. I would like to get this done myself one day I think.

SViswan (3855) | 3 months ago | oops...i do the cleaning once a week (meticulously) for myself and the kids. The little one had a very bad ear infection for 3 weeks. I hope it wasn't due to the excessive cleaning that I did (though I don't go too deep inside...but I could have pushed some wax in by mistake). My dad has got that done...but he is partially deaf in one ear.

8. auntiedis (132) | 3 months ago | I clean my ears with cotton swabs because I can't stand that if I don't, people may see it. After I shower, any water in there itches, so I dry it out with a cotton swab.

9. dpk262006 (5850) | 3 months ago | I fully endorse your views and agree whatever your have written - earwax should not removed using any pointed object such as needle or even ear-buds. My ENT specialists tells me that when it accumlates in excess, it comes out automatically, as and when we chew our food. I normally do not clean out wax from my ears. What do you do in this case?

SViswan (3855) | 3 months ago | lol..I am a cleaner...and I clean out mine and the kids' ears every week! I didn't believe my dad when he told me this years ago. Actually it wasn't that I didn't believe him...but I just couldn't stand not cleaning my ears out. But what you have written is exactly what my dad was told by the doctor.

10. ElicBxn (8909) | 3 months ago | my mom was an earwax cleaner, but she was very careful after college I tried to "be good" and not clean it out One day, after a shower where I got a BIG earful of water washing my hair my ear started itching It was MADDENING!!! I got one of mom's swabs and just gave it a swirl and out it came, completely WRAPPED in hardened earwax! A few more swirls, the ear was dry and no longer itched. I've never been able to tollerate earwax since. I'm not saying I'm digging it out every day, but I clean them when they ITCH! Oh, and as a child, my mom said I was the only child she knew that could go swimming every day and still have earwax at the end of the week.

SViswan (3855) | 3 months ago | I am a cleaner too and do it every week (for the kids too). I wonder if that was what led to the infection for my little son (though I am very careful when I do theirs')
