I think a teacher should have a lot of patience as he deals with students with different mind set and personalities. He should be open minded and accept learning from his students since learning is an interactive process. A teacher should be professional at all times. He should maintain respect to himself and to others in order for his students to give him respect too. Approachable and accommodating plus a little bit of being strict..

First I would like to commend you for being in such a revered position as teacher. For twenty years. You must be doing something right. I believe that is a good thing to be a teacher especially if you have the ability to gain respect from many people especially your own students.
A teacher should be very understanding and helpful to their pupils. One thing I know is that if you do your job right there will be a long lasting impression on your students for years to come. Good luck and keep up the good work!

A teacher should have....
A plan.

They should be well-organized and have their lesson plans in harmony with their year end goals.
They should identify those that will need attention, those that could possibly help you in your goal, and those that will distract from your goals.
They should have an idea about the history of each student and use preventitive measures to ensure that the students that need a challenge get one and the students that need prodding are pushed into doing the best they can.

They should make it clear that they will tolerate nothing that takes away from the atmosphere of the classroom in that it is a place to learn.
They should make the students list goals that they have for the year and have them outline how they will go about it. Have them keep records and record benchmarks they meet during the year.
They should realize that not everyone will learn the same way and should adjust their teaching style to reflect that when need be.
They should take an interest in the curriculum, and develop special projects that will supplement anything lacking in any given subjects classroom material.

They should keep a non judgemental attitude and be accepting of ideas that show a different thought process and alter their expectations accordingly.

A teacher should have patience and a love for educating and molding the minds of their students. This is a profession that one should not take lightly, its one of the most important things one can do.

A teacher can make or break a student.

i AM a teacher as well and based on my experience, I realized that there are traits a teacher needs to posses in order to fullfill his or her jobe well:

1. We(teachers) should understand that we are acting as a parents... not a bos inside the classroom.
2. We should lower down our levels to reach for our students. When we show our supremacy, our students will lost openess to us.
3. We must be creative in mixing the traits of a helpfull friend and a mentor.
4. Reach out.
5. We must have a 150% patience.
6. We mus learn how to respect... to be respected.
7. A teacher's greatest achievement is when their students became BETTER than them on their respective fields.
8. Learn to talk in private...
9. We must have a ready smile for all our students.
and 10. We must have plenty of appreciation for whatever our students may accomplish. This appreciation is like a water that nourishes their creativity and this will push them to learn more... and discover more.

I am into for 4 years only, and these are the things (so war), I learned in teaching. I am a teacher, I touched many lives and I am always proud to be one.

I respect your profession dearly! And think teachers should receive more recognition for their job. as you said society expects somuch from teachers but give them so little! It´s our teachers who mold and give our childron the tools for the future as they spend almost as much time at school than at home. It´s such a noble profession and is so unappreciated. I remember my teachers with so much respect and gratitude, i wish we would appreciate them more and even more importantly, pay them better salaries.

I don't think that there is an answer to your question, at least not that I know of. I don't think that you can learn to be a good teacher (and I'm not referring to you personally), you either are good at it, or you aren't. You can communicate teaching techniques to aspiring teachers, but mastering those techniques doesn't turn them into good teachers. I believe it's a talent you are born with, or not, like a talented musician. How many GOOD teachers do you know? I haven't met many. From my school years, I rememer two, and they were, at the time, the most unlikely candidates I would have thought of.

All teachers should be caring and always take their time to address any and all concerns from students. Teachers are there to teach and help children on up to adults succeed in life. You also need great patience and you need to enjoy education.

If any teacher doesn't meet those 3 qualifications then they are in the wrong profession.

i also love to teach and had been teaching students from various ages as well... i give private tuitions, sunday school and used to be an assistant lecturer as well in the past... i think a teacher should be approachable, show empathy to what the students need, apprehensive, able to make decisions and have good communication skills... take care and have a nice day...

Thinking back to my school years, I seem to remember most from classes where the teachers were funny and passionate. Compassion and patience went hand in hand with these traits. They not only eduacted me but showed me who there were as a person therefore inspiring me to learn more and influence me further.
