Help, I am trying everything to keep my cat from running out the house when I come in. I do not want him to get hurt if he runs out, and I am scare he won't know the way back if he gets lost. What are some tips and techniques for keeping him indoors?

One of my cats will always run to the door when it is opened. My husband has the habit of standing with the door open when he is telling someone good bye after visiting. I am always yelling close the door, even though there is another closed door before you get outside. Jake has gotten out quite a few times, but then again, I have a second closed door before you get to the street.
One morning, when I was going to work, my husband left out before me, to start the car. I started out and forgot something and went back inside, silly me, I did not close the first door all the way. When I went to the door I saw it opened, and low and behold my husband did not close the second door to the street. To my dismay, I saw jake standing outside on the porch. My heart dropped, I did not want to alarm him, and have he run towards the street. I quickly went back into the house and got a pack of their treats, and called his name and showed him the treats, he came running back up the stairs, boy was I relieved.

I do not know if there is a technique or not, just be careful when you open the door and make sure your cat is not near.
I think all cats try to get out when the door is open.
Where I used to live, we would let them go outside, because there was a fenced in yard. My older cat would find a nice place to nap, my younger cat wanted to explore, so we always had him on a long leash.

True, thanks for the response. Its really difficult because I wonder if he doesn't like it at home. I try to do as much as I can for him, so In my mind I am wondering why would he want to leave. Cats have a mind of their own...

Keeping some treats handy by the door might be a good idea too! Glad to hear that you got him back inside safe and sound.

The best way to keep your cat from running out when you open your door is to have the cat in another room with a door where he cant get out to the main door way. We had a cat to do the same way and we had to do him that way for a few weeks then he got use to it and never tried to come out of the door again. Hope this helps you out!

sumpter (81)   ranked 529 out of 1,060 in pet owner  3 months ago

In order for this to work he wouldn't be able to roam freely around the house when I am gone then right? It just me and him here so I wouldnt be able to let him out until i got back home.

Take a soda can and fill it with coins. Shake it whenever he comes near the door. Sooner or later he will learn not to try to go out. Make a big noise when you go out and come in. It's not that he doesn't like it living with you; it's just that cats are curious and he wants to know what's going on out there.

One thing that worked for me was to have one person on the other side of the door (coming in) and me on the side with the cat. When the door starts to open, squirt the cat with a bunch of warm water with a squirt gun. Cats generally don't like getting wet, so repeating this sequence makes them think every time they're going towards that door water will come from someplace. I stood back further when I squirted so that the cat wouldn't associate it with me that's doing it. Yes, I know it's messy, but it's only water...it won't hurt the cat, and depending on the type of flooring it wouldn't hurt that either. The door my kitty kept trying to get out of was on a breezeway, and there was a door to the house, then the breezeway, then the outside door (and somebody always was forgetting to shut the door from the house into the breezeway and the cat would lurch out of the house! I know it sounds like a wacky idea, but it worked well for me as my cat hated getting wet (I'd keep squirting until she fled from the door...pretty soon she associated getting wet with going by that door and avoids it totally!) Let us know what finally works for you, and good luck!

Thanks, I like your technique by standing farther away. My cat is good for looking for where the source of the water is coming from. Lo and behold there I am holding a bottle and he looks right at me! I can try and use different ways to do it. However, I do not only use the spraycan for when he tries to get out the door. I use it for whenever hs is excessively being bad. Should I only use it for the door? Would that make it more powerful?

myLot reputation of 99/100. JoyfulOne (3288)   ranked 190 out of 1,060 in pet owner  3 months ago

Cats, like almost all other animals, learn by repitition. If they associate something they don't like with something, after repeated times, it will learn to stay away or it'll get squirted. I like the squirt gun, as opposed to spray bottles, because it shoots a thicker and harder stream, and the bottles are more likely to mist some when they spray. Also, there's better aim with a squirt gun, and more water comes out at a time. If it was me, I wouldn't use the squirt gun for playtime, just for reprimands like when it's at the door. I've used this way to also train my kitties to stay off my counters in the kitchen. One cat is now 17+ and the other is around 8-10 yrs old, and to this day they stay off of the counters and no further squirt gun reprimands have been necessary.

Both joyfulone and mcat have excellent ideas. I use the water bottle one myself and it works very good. I'll have to add the soda can/coin one to my arsenal just to mix things up. Also, don't dawdle when going out. Get all of your stuff ready, purse, shoes, coat, keys, etc., before you head for the door. If they see you hanging around the door, playing with the keys and tying your shoes, they know you're about to go out and they get ready to try to run out the door.

sumpter (81)   ranked 529 out of 1,060 in pet owner  3 months ago

Yes, you are exactly right about having your things ready if I am to go outside. I am pretty good about it, but my visitors are not, and I am having to yell close the door because Buster is outside. It happened last weekend when my parents came down. They were going outside to the patio and he ran out. However, there was a dog barking outside and Buster ran right back inside. He was scared the, but it doesn't stop him from trying to get out the very next day.

I use a spray bottle for him and it works pretty good. He knows what it is and what it can do to him. It only works when I use it, and it does not seem to be a deterent. Its a work in progress I know and I just have to keep working with him.

We used to have a cat named Petey that loved to try to get outside and there were a couple times he made it to the porch before he was grabbed and put back in the house, he was a very crazy cat, since he came from two crazy households one with a lot of dogs that tried to eat him,and one was my Granny and I do not blame him because I think I would go crazy living with her,and the only thing we could do was keep a close eye on him when we opened the door, and try to not keep it open very long at a time.

sumpter (81)   ranked 529 out of 1,060 in pet owner  3 months ago

Thanks for your response. You said used to have a Cat, is Petey still running around?

My cats run to the front when it is opened they have not tried to run out it yet though but they run out the back door to the enclosed porch all of the time though they like to smell the things that are back there. I hope they never get outside they wouldn't know wha to do.

Doesn't it just drive you crazy? My cat tried to do it again today but rain back in when he realized that it was raining!

Thats a good idea. I now start to do that and I can just feel his little hear beating. His nose is trying to smell everything and it just the world that he wants.

My cat tries that all the time, but funny enough only when we come in, leaving the house is not a big deal... Also usually just walking through a gap your body size will sort things out. I mostly stick my foot in first very firmly and the cat just moves out of the way... My boyfriend though doesn't do too well;) he usually bends down to fend of the cat and blocks the hall passage, on top of which the cat will run past him about 75% of the time anyways...

In my cats case though I think it is mostly the fun of being chased up and down the stairs mostly... as left alone for five minutes in the hallway he will just come back to the flat door by himself.:)
