Selling Your Books email this discussion to a friend?

Do any of you sell your used books online. I am a reader, and I have 1000's of books.
I often sell them back to a used bookstore, but get literally cents for them. I'm just curious if any of you sell your books at ebay, or amazon, etc.

Greetings, well I don't sell the books that I've read. If I loved them then I keep them (and get in trouble with my dad since I've got lots of them), but IF I just like them then I just give them away to my friends. Though selling them would give me a couple of cents or even a buck, its just hard for me to part with books that I've read. For me they become part of me. Besides I mostly get the books I read from thrift stores or old and used book stores. I'm always puzzled on why people would sell the books I find in those stores, but as they say different strokes for different folks.

I too am an avid reader as is my husband. Yes we have a lot of books and I have thought of selling them online, but they were too hard to part with for such little money and all the trouble of packaging and mailing them off.

I thought, at one time, it would be great to open a used book store. However, it takes a good amount of money and risk factor. So, have not persued that.

I too, would rather give them away to friends, but none of them are readers as I am.

If you come up with a good answer, let me know.

Kyellis,I do part with many of my books now. As I've gotten older, I realize I seldom read these books twice. I cannot convince my daughters to read my books and share my ideas, and so it does no good to keep them. In some ways the books I keep represent who I want to be, and who I am. They express ideas of things I like better than I can express it myself. But nonetheless, ....I am not altogether these books either. I am more than what the books represent, and less too. I am not the same. The books perhaps are thought provokers. They have steered me in directions I was not always headed toward. They have opened my mind to new possibilities. I speak better, ....I'm slightly more mature than I would have been without the books. I challenge people. How wonderful they are, aren't they. walkgal

Yes, .....I understand what you are saying. Books are our friends aren't they.

Hello walkgal. Well, my book collection isn't that big, but if they do reach thousands, I don't think I can sell them and I can't think of myself doing. It's somewhat relaxing for me to see my book collection as it grow.

walkgal (57)   ranked 232 out of 392 in books  3 months ago

Anke,
ha.....yes, I have had that feeling about books. But once you hit 63, ....I think your perspective changes. A few books I keep. But I've read so many books, and I've become more discerning as I get older as to what comprises a good book for me.
I also am running out of space. We've downsized. I don't have the time nor energy to keep a large house with lots of stuff. So as I reach toward the winter of my life, .....I have cleaned out the huge closets, .....given away the dust collectors,
and gone for the clean, less full house. .......Even at my age, I am still very active. I play tennis 2-3 times a week, and golf 2-3 times a week, and babysit 2 full days a week,....as well as bowl, play on the computer, read and go out with my 3 girls. The less "stuff" I have the more time I have to do other things.

Don't get me wrong! I still have lots and lots and lots of books. But unlike you, I am trying to part with the vast bulk of them. It's a process. Oh well. You keep reading my dear woman. walkgal

walkgal, I'm a guy...lol...:)

Yeah, changes would come....But I still rather not sell it, but who can say...maybe I will someday, but I think that's still a long way off.....:)

i give it away... usually to friends (without even realizing it). when i get excited about a book i just read i push it off to other people to read... and forget about it.

another forum i joined to had this charity thing where we donate books to be given to a public library. i think it's better to donate it rather than sell it again anyway.

failsafe,
That is wonderful how you do. I belonged to a bookclub for awhile, and I would give the books away then. Now I use the extra money to treat my grown kids to breakfast, and little things like that. But you're right, ...donating would be better.

I love books and I love keeping the books that I have read! However, I recently became a member of ebay and I have been looking into the idea of selling some of my books. As a matter of fact I have just sold my first book on ebay, ok we are talking a minimal amount of money here, but I definitely like this new trend! I think that there is something exciting about selling your things, especially when it comes to ebay. So, I will start shifting through my books to see if there is anything else that I am able to auction. Andrew

If you have a Half Price bookstore near you, (look under Half Price books on
"whitepages.com" than you can sell them there. I then use the money to buy more books. You don't get a lot of money but it's quick. I also order free magazines online, ....and than sell them at half price for about 6-8 dollars a week. I make more money on current magazines. walkgal karen
