Some people are useless |
I was in the park a while ago and I saw a poor swan had gotten caught up in a fishing line. The fishing line was in his bill and he looked like he might swallow it. He was distressed and swimming around in circles trying to free himself. The park warden was sitting on a wall nearby drinking coffee and talking to someone so I said "excuse me, there's a swan caught in a fishing line". He looked at me and kind of shrugged it off as if to say "so what" and said something in Polish. I said "well, is there anyone you can call?". The park warden said something else in Polish and he and his friend smiled and carried on their conversation. I thought that this warden, being employed by the town council, might have a phone number of someone else in the council that deals with wildlife. Apparently that's too much to ask for though. No offence to any Polish people or anyone else, but why is anyone who can't speak English employed in a job where the general public might want to ask their advice or help? Also how can anyone look at an animal in distress and not care? I looked back at the swans a few minutes later and there didn't seem to be any caught in a fishing line. I hope the swan managed to free himself because he'll be waiting for a long time for anyone in my town to help. Sadly if he does free himself that will leave the problem of a fishing line in the river for another swan to get caught in.

1. royal52gens (1989) | 3 months ago | Sadly, it is very true that there are people in our world that are completely useless. They are also unreliable and unhelpful. The saddest part of this is it as you have observed..........somebody or some animal will suffer because of these useless individuals. Very sad.

crispeater (1323) | 3 months ago | I really have nothing against immigrants but if they can't speak English in an English speaking country there's certain jobs they shouldn't have. I just hope the poor swan managed to free himself. I also hope a child never gets hurt in the park and needs someone to call for when that warden is on duty. Thanks for responding.

2. kenzie45230 (2331) | 3 months ago | Perhaps I'm a trouble maker, but I think that after that kind of reaction from a park warden, I think I would report what happened. That is no way to treat a swan or a person. Both of you deserved better.

| |
crispeater (1323) | 3 months ago | I did actually think about reporting him. He looked at me as if I was intruding on his conversation. It's pointless having a park warden like that. There's every chance that someday a child could get cut with glass or something and need help and this warden will be no use. It would probably take something like that to happen and for a parent to sue before the council gets a bit of common sense.

3. nannacroc (1821) | 3 months ago | This makes me so angry. As you say, why employ a non-English speaker in this capacity. I don't believe what the government says about British people not wanting these jobs. I have a strong suspicion that the councils actually get subsidies to employ these people. I hope the swan did manage to free itself or someone managed to help it. Surely part of a decent park wardens job would be to look out for fishing lines and remove them before they can harm any wildlife.

crispeater (1323) | 3 months ago | There's actually another two park wardens who are Irish, I'm sure that they'd like extra hours or another Irish person would be happy with this job. Anyone would have to be better than the park warden I just encountered. At the very least I expected himm to take out a mobile phone and call someone out to deal with this. He just looked at me as if I was being a nuisance. The sad thing is that his friend had a child who had been feeding the swans. I would have thought if nothing else they'd be concerned for the swans that the child seemed to like. I hope he did free himself because no one else will. It's next to impossible to get through to anyone or even find the phone number of anyone that deals with wildlife here.

4. danishcanadian (15192) | 3 months ago | Don't worry, I saw your point perfectly. That he spoke Polish was simply a description in order to paint a picture of what was happening, and had nothing to do with the man himself. He sounds like he would have been an a-hole no matter what language he spoke, or even if his English was perfect. I agree with your question, though. People who are going to be employed in another country, really need to learn the language.

crispeater (1323) | 3 months ago | The sad thing is the park wardens friend had a child who I think had been feeding the swans. I would have thought that he'd at least be concerned for the swans because the child seemed to like them. Like you said though he's probably an a-hole. There's no shortage of them in every nationality.

5. easymoney75503 (1258) | 3 months ago | well i worked witht h game wardens in texas for many years and to be honest that is part of his job. you should report him. no one needs that type of person employeed for that type of job. park ranger, wardens, and any type of wildlife employee is suppose to be there for the people, animals, and enviroment. he vilolated all 3 in this sitution. people like him are the reason why things just get worse and not better. report him please. also keep in mind when you are doing this that point you brought up by the line still being there it is another creature that will find it. we lose so many of our natural reasources each day and this is not just a reasource but a life.

crispeater (1323) | 3 months ago | You may be right that I should report him. I was going to let it go, but there's a good chance that an animal or a person could need help in the future and this warden will be useless.

6. worldwise1 (5304) | 3 months ago | The situation you just described, crispeater, is not only common in your hometown. Things like this are happening all over the world on a daily basis, sadly. It is a symptom of the sickness in our society that is rampant. People don't care about others and certainly not about most animals. I also feel that if someone is living in your country they should be willing to learn to speak the language.
| |
| |
crispeater (1323) | 3 months ago | I think they should learn the language too when they're in a job where they have to deal with the public. It seems like a pretty good job that other people would love to have. What I found sad was the wardens friend had a child who had been feeding the swans, if nothing else I would have thought that the warden would be concerned for the swans that the child seemed to like.

7. LittleMel (5162) | 3 months ago | i am an immigrant myself and i actually agree with you. i am married to a canadian but i know that if i were to live in this country i have to be able to speak english because if i can't say what i mean how can i mean what i say? i mean i don't know big words or rarely used words but i have to know enough to understand and respond to others. i actually don't see any reason why non english speaker is allowed to live in an english speaking country even though they have a family there already, let alone get a job that requires a lot of communication. if i were you i would report this person to city hall or whoever employs him, he may not be animal lover or doesn't know what to do, but it seems he doesn't even bother to try to help so what is he there for anyway?
| |
| |
crispeater (1323) | 3 months ago | I agree that people should at least have a basic knowledge of English for certain jobs. It seems stupid to employ someone who can't speak a word of English in a job where they're going to have to deal with the public. I probably should report this person. Hopefully I could do that anonymously and without causing too much of a fuss.

8. Chevee (2017) | 3 months ago | I don't like people that don't do their job, just wasting every ones time. All they are waiting on is a pay check. Evidently he and the person he was talking to were making a joke out of it. Even if the park warden couldn't help he could have notified animal control. It makes you wonder if it had been a child would he tried to help.
| |
| |
crispeater (1323) | 3 months ago | I wonder what this warden actually does all day. It seems like a waste of money to employ him when there's probably hundreds of other people that would love his job. I can actually imagine a child getting hurt someday and this warden not helping and then the council getting sued. It would probably take something like that to make the council take notice. I was surprised at the friend laughing as he had a small child who had been feeding the swans a few minutes earlier. I thought they would have at least been concerned about an animal that the child seemed to like.
