What does your writing space look like? | | I'm always curious what environments work best for other writers. Most writers have distinctive preferences about the sorts of things they use to help them in their craft. Some even get a little possesive about things like pens, ahem, I wouldn't know anything about that.:) But what does your space look like? Mine is the standard computer desk, with a bulletin board of projects and inspiration. I have to have music, so there are speakers and c.d.s scattered around. Also, I like to have a family picture up. My space is in an isolated part of the house, which allows me privacy. That can be necessary, sometimes my arguments with characters gets a bit rowdy. What about you?

I have a book shelf nearby with writing books and copies of publications I've been published in. It's in a corner of the living room; I'm not fortunate enough to have my own room for writing. Kelly

DoriLentrich (148) | 3 months ago | Well, to call it a room of my own would be a stretch. It's also the guest room, the library, the storage room, the exercise room, the craft room, and music room. But normally, I can carve time out for myself in there.

| | 2. cher913 (8859) | 3 months ago | when i was seriously writing my space was somewhat organized (i had a write on/wipe off board, a recipe box for ideas and my favourite pencils - all sharp!) but now that i am doing a lot of paper art, my stuff is very messy!

DoriLentrich (148) | 3 months ago | Did you find the recipe box worked? I keep a file on my computer and also a hard copy file that houses my fragments. Then there's notebooks filled with scraps of ideas. Why is inspiration such a fickle mistress?

| | 3. showpup (65) | 3 months ago | Mine is organized chaos. Several notebooks; each labeled for a different topic or writing platform (eHow, Triond, Associated Content, etc), pens and pencils tossed about and scratch paper tucked halfway under the keyboard. I have a computer armoir and on the side doors I have my 'vision wall' of sorts... photos of things I visualize having one day and a close up shot of my daughter in law's tummy now that she's showing with her pregnancy and a dollar bill I marked as $100,000 as that's my goal for a yearly writer's salary. (watch The Secret and you'll understand). I also have TONS of research books all over and around my desk.

DoriLentrich (148) | 3 months ago | "Vision wall," I like that. Organized chaos, I think that describes most writers. We spend our time with the insanity of our ideas and then that bleeds out into our environment. But then chaos is change and change is life.

| | 4. Xdrowninghavocx (3071) | 3 months ago | I don't have a writing space. I writer mostly in my room while sitting on my bed. I've gotten a lot done that way. And usually I'm facing the TV too. I tried the whole desk thing when I was younger, but I rarely sat there. I just felt uneasy and staged, you know? I guess that approach wasn't for me. I do type out stuff while sitting at the computer sometimes.

DoriLentrich (148) | 3 months ago | Writing is such a personal thing. I knew a guy once who could only write outside. It was great in the Spring and Summer, but when the weather turned nippy, he got a major case of writer's block. I completely understand about it feeling staged. Sometimes, if you make it too much like work, it comes out dull and uninspired. Do you find the t.v. is a distraction at all?

| | | 5. mcdimples (6) | 3 months ago | Being at home I have access to a great writing space. Actually I have two spaces at home one in the office I share with my husband the other in the kitche/family room. The office gives me more privacy but writing in the kitchen I can get things done. My space is loaded with books on Poetry and Writing. Yes, you guessed it I am a poet and I am working on two poetry books. I have a bulletin board where I keep track of current and future projects. I usually have my ipod on but it can be distracting at times. I have serveral writing tablets to help with ideas. I read alot of books and keep a log of all my work, as I hope to be a published writer some day.

| | 6. xParanoiax (3812) | 3 months ago | My computer, my notes and notebooks everywhere...and hopefully a pen around somewhere, lol. I'm not very picky, as long as I've got music, the internet...so I can multi-task if I want to -- I can write. If I need inspiration, then I'll go for a walk, heh.

|
DoriLentrich (148) | 3 months ago | Music is key for me too. I find it really influences my writing. I don't want to be listening to some pop princess when I'm writing some dark, soul-wrenching scene. Not that I ever listen to pop princesses, no, not me. Those c.d.s were gifts, yeah, that's it. I find walking is good for creativity as well. Do you have a specific place you like to walk for inspiration, or is up and down the block good enough?
| |
|
|
xParanoiax (3812) | 3 months ago | I'm not much into pop either, heh...and dark stuff's pretty much all I write, so I guess it's not much of a surprise that I listen to rock, metal, gothic, and some eclectic songs. Well, the city's very...stifling for me. I find that walking in places where there's alot of people scatters whatever inspirations are there because I get so focused on the other people -- having to be wary in case one of them should decide to jump me, or to prepare in case one decided, spontaneously, to talk to me. I prefer to walk where it's wooded, so country roads are good.

DoriLentrich (148) | 3 months ago | I think music can really set the scene for what you're writing. It's amazing how a particular piece of music can really make your writing shift. It's the same if you have a bad day at work or a good day. Country roads are great. Those large expanses of wilderness and no cars or other things to get in the way. Luckily, I don't live in an overly urban area. Sometimes, I need to go walk in the city just to get the pulse of the place. I don't know why, but I'm very affected by where I am when I write. If I want to write about the city I need to go hang out there for a while before putting pen to paper. If I were an actor, I'd be a method actor, probably. Oh, the trials of writing, all that travel I "have" to do just to get it right. Man, what bad luck.;)
