Speed Cameras - Covert or Obvious? email this discussion to a friend?

I recently read a commercial transport magazine article about police speed cameras and
how it has been fairly well publicised that they should be located (permanently or mobile) in places which can be seen easily by the approaching driver. Further, I understand that good warning signs are supposed to be in place well before the location of these cameras.

According to my understanding, the article reported that the police were caught using speed detection cameras from the back of a horse box, yes ... a horse box - which was parked in a prime location for their easy pickings.

Do you think that this sort of activity is right and proper behaviour?

I don't understand why they're supposed to be seen, after all, we're not supposed to be speeding, it's dangerous and people get killed. I don't mind them being there out of sight because I don't speed and I'd rather they were there than wern't.

I agree with your comment. However, the regulations seemingly state that signs and visibility are the mandate - 'to serve as a reminder' before being caught.

In a danger spot - bring in the cameras! But in a senseless situation - why do it just for revenue (allegedly)?

I'm not bothered about the legal side of things, I just want the roads to be safe.

On a dry road, in good conditions, with a good vehicle, a little over the prescribed speed limit (I mean an open road and not built up) never did anyone any harm. This is precisely the police operation which gets all the flack - and rightly so.

While they are nicking someone in a Ferrari for doing 4 MPH over the limit, some old lady, not too far away, is being mugged by a group of scum for her pension money. Or, if you want, some innocent infant girl is being sexually abused by some filth. Now tell me what the police do about that - they want virtual forensic proof from you before they will even consider acting on your report.

The little driving indiscretion is a victimless offence - the other I mentioned are what I call SERIOUS - that's where the police have lost their public support.
