are checks almost obsolete? |
|
I went to the grocery today and a man paid with a check. It took so long for him to write it out (no one had a pen to start with) then run it through. It made me wonder if checks will be obsolete soon. I look at my checkbook and I write maybe 4 checks a month as most is auto withdrawal or done with debit cards and transfers. Could you live without writing checks or do you still prefer them?

| 1. jewel127 (46) | 3 months ago | I do a lot of errands for my mother, grocery shopping included. She always gives me her checkbook to take the the supermarket. She HAS a debit card, credit card, and enough cash to make the purchase, she just prefers to use a check. I'm not sure why. I notice that the people in line behind me tend to get a little restless and impatient when I pull out the checkbook. For this reason, I often fill out most of the check (minus the check amount) before I even step foot in line. I don't see a lot of other people using checks anymore, I seem to be one of the few. This is the age of new technology, and it seems that I'm in the "stone age" for still using checks when I could easily scan a credit card for a speedier transaction. Hey, I guess the credit card users are saving trees.

2. relundad (1323) | 3 months ago | I think checks are about obsolete nowadays. So many companies have gone to required auto debit. My insurance, cable and alarm companies give you no option. Some of the companies that still give you the option of paying with a check charge a higher fee for processing, so its cheaper for you to use the auto debit. Also I have notice that at some of the Walmart's in my area, they will allow you to write the check out, and it is run thru there register, but they had the check right back to you. As of date, I only write one check per month. The city that I live in is so small that they don't offer any automated payment services. All utilities are paid to the city and everyone in the city is due on the 22nd of the month.

3. BlueCupcake (137) | 3 weeks ago | My mom always pays by checks specially if the amount to be paid is a very big amount. I think that it is a lot safer to carry checks than cash because checks need to be processed first before they can be cashed out. Think of it this way if you get robbed holding a big amount of cash the robber can do whatever with that money instantly. While with a check he won't be able to cash it out because his name isn't on the "pay to" line. Usually my mom pays checks to companies and banks but she pays cash when we go out to buy groceries and stuff.

5. jesssp (273) | 2 weeks ago | I hate checks. It always bugs me when people pay for things where I work and have me fill out the check for them - I have awful writing. I write about three a month transferring money from bank to bank and that's it. I think they're definitely becoming obsolete. With online banking, debit and credit cards they're just not necessary for many applications.
