My Three-Year Old Daughter Had An Ultrasound.... email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 97/100. toni_nakama (2245)   ranked 122 out of 13,009 in parenting3 months ago

My daughter had urinary tract infection three weeks ago. She had finished her antibiotic and had another urine test which turned out to be good and clear of infection and bacterias. Her doctor however required her to have an ultrasound to make sure that there is no kidney problem related to her UTI. I was very skeptical about the idea of submitting her to an ultrasound since she is such a cry baby that she will surely freak out. I know thought that this is for her own good. And so last night I talked to her one-on-one and explained to her that she needs to undergo this to make sure that she won't get sick again. I explained to her step-by-step the procedure that will happen, from fasting few hours before the ultrasound, to filling in her bladder and holding it until after the procedure, as well the gel that will be put on her tummy area, and so on. I was amazed how she behaved and did not cry during the entire process. The ultrasound and the trip to and from the toilet of the clinic went really well. I have never seen her so behaved before as all I thought she will freak out and give me a hard time. The last time she really freaked out was when we brought her to the hospital to take off the lentil bean that was stucked in her ear (kids really try everything when they play, haha!) The doctor and "three" nurses cannot calm her down that they had to put an oxygen mask on her to put her to a very sleepy state. But this ultrasound today went really well. I realized that if only parents talk to their kids in a way that they will understand things easily and prepare the kid in any situation, mentally, physically and emotionally, also spiritually (she prayed last night), there's nothing impossible for our little angels to behave like well-mannered adults.
Have you experienced difficult times with your kids where they seem to be very unmanageable? How did you handle them? How will you prepare your kids to undergo procedures that seem scary to them? Share your parenting tips and advice. Have a nice day ahead you all.

My daughter had an ultrasound and an upper GI when she was only 5 weeks old. She was too young to really understand. Now, take her to get shots or anything now and she freaks out. My son once needed to get blood drawn when he was about 2. He had a fit and it took 3 people to hold him down so they could do it.

Hi there. The ultrasound was ok since your baby was too young and won't complain. But to draw blood from a two year old would definitely scare the kid because of the needle. I remember my nephew when he was 2 years old and was hospitalized, blood was also drawn from him and he was crying but was just sitting still. We, adults, were all crying too behind him while he was crying because we felt so sorry for him. The stupid nurses did it twice (oh I was so angry) because they made a mistake the first time they injected the needle in his wrist, so the pain for him was doubled.

Three year old baby means, you only want to take care her know, actually now a days there are many diseases coming, we can't prevent us or our family from that kind of diseases, but urinary tract infection and all is coming because of the not drinking water, like that only know, i am not clear about this. But diseases coming for three year old baby is very problem for that baby and for us also, we should take care plus plus our baby on that time.

The treatments for the baby will make the baby very afraid on that time, for us means itself it is very problem, then how a small child can toggle these kind of things.

My advice is we want put some effects to maintain the child, i am telling that we are not maintaining our child, but some extra cover is needed for little kids.

happy Hi there. My daughter actually loves drinking water. There was just a time that she was lazy going back and forth to the toilet and holding her bladder for a long time, so that's how the infection started. Now I observe her and send her to the potty every now and then especially when I think that she needs to go to the potty. She's doing well. Thanks for the response.

Hello toni_nakama,

Thanks God that everything went well! Your daughter is very good. I have a two year old son and sometimes, he is really, really naughty and hard to take care. He can understand me better now but he is an active boy and I always have a hard time with him (yeah, I do enjoy every moment that I spend with him but oh, my! he always test my patience) The only thing that scares him right now is whenever he needs to cut his hair. He can recognize the salon and whenever we reach the place, he will cry and scream. The first time I cut his hair there, the salon owner needed all her six staff to 'entertain' him - just him alone! I still don't understand why he is afraid of cutting his hair. He is not a type of boy whom you can let him sit and explain (He doesn't even speak fluently right now, still talking in his own language) We already had three trips there and I think the fourth trip is coming soon!

happy Hi gr8. I used to cut my son's hair (I never thought I can be a barber! lol ) until just recently that I brought him the first time to the kids' salon. Oh, he behaved really well. It is a special salon for kids where they put him to a car seat infront of the mirror. It looks like a playground. They gave him lollipop, then turned the Barney video on. And wow, the barber was so fast in cutting his hair, their barbers were really trained to handle kids. That was in the Philippines when we went on holiday last month. Now, that we are back here in Sydney I need to look for a similar barbershop for kids. happy

Hello toni_nakama,

I just watched this movie, ' You Don't Mess with Zohan' and saw a part where it showed a kid having a hair cut in a salon exactly the same that you told me here. How I wish I can locate the same kid salon here and I bet he will enjoy having his hair cut.

happy Try to find one near you. I am also now in a hunt for a similar barber shop here in our suburb. Hope I can find one. wink

Hi toni,

wow! That was very good! I agree with you, when parents will give time to explain the entire process to kids, I am sure they will listen and I know they trust their parents! SO, she saw you being very confident about it and she trust you too! That is very amazing, I am sure that is a very rare occasion because common is kids will always freak out! At least, this post will enlighten some parents if ever they will be facing the same situation...SOmetimes, parents are the one who are scared and they cannot think what to do and fail to give time to explain to the kids so, normally, kids will see their parents who are nervous, it will also reflect to them!
Great advice here friend and good job! Great kid too!

I had to take my daughter for an ultrasound was too. Her was for her heart to see about a heart murmer. I too was suprised at how well behaved she was during this process. I think she was too intrigued by all the equipment with all the light and monitors and that she forgot to be frighted. I think her curiosity helped her overcome any fears that she may have been having at the time. The tv playing cartoons was also a nice distraction for her too.

myLot reputation of 97/100. toni_nakama (2245)   ranked 122 out of 13,009 in parenting  3 months ago

happy Yes, oftentimes their curiousity helps in overcoming their fears. My daughter was just excited with the thought of the ultrasound when I told her she can see the inside of her tummy on the television screen. lol Hope your daughter is doing well.

My daughter has went through several difficult medical procedures since she was born almost ten years ago. By the time Caitlyn was fifteen months old she had four surgeries one being open heart. UTI infections have become a common problem for her because her left kidney doesn't function well. Since Caitlyn began having procedures done I have always explained to her what will be done as well as I have always insisted on being with her. For Caitlyn she fears needles because she had to take this one type of antibiotic that was extremely thick and burned when it was injected into the thigh muscles even after they used lidocaine to numb the pain.

My best advice for you is to always be open and honest with your child as best you can. Don't tell them it will only hurt a little because you actually don't know how much or how little the pain will be for them. If it hurts more when you said it would hurt a little the child has a hard time trusting that you know if it will hurt or not. Another thing you can do is see if she can old on to a special toy for the procedure. It helps make them feel comfortable. And no matter how scared you are you must remain calm in front of your children during the procedure.

I hope that you find my suggestions useful. I also hope that everything goes well for your daughter. May God bless her.

happy Thanks for the advice. I will always keep that in mind, being open and honest with kids. And I can tell you are a very tough mom my friend. Surgeries for kids are nerve-wrecking for parents because parents understand the whole situation whereas the very young kids are innocently there on the surgery table. Wish you and your family all the best in everything. happy

w00t What a brave little girl you have there Toni.

My son has a scheduled Echocardiogram once a year. Because the doctors think he was born with mitral insufficiency or mitral regurgitation, he has a Echo done at every visit. He actually doesn't mind it because they set him up in a room where they screen a movie for him to watch, while the nurse or whatever they're called, does the cardiogram. It takes about 30 minutes, and while he's watching, I'm also their watching what the nurse does and the tv monitor of his heart.

His cardiologist is really good about explaining things to me and especially to my son, so that puts him at ease. The movie takes his mind of whats actually happening, and he sits through it without any problems.

happy Hi my friend. Maddy is old enough to understand that all those procedures are for his own good. I can tell that your son is really intelligent and will mature at an early age. It takes good parenting to raise such a good boy. Congratulations. Hope everything is ok with him. happy

At least your little one is old enough to explain things to. I remember when my son was 6 months old and doctors discovered a small hole in his heart. We went thru many many tests that an infant just doesn't understand. Luckily he outgrew that problem. Then when he was three he had to have exploratory surgery. Doctors that time thought he had a hole in his skull. Luckily it turned out to be nothing serious.

Oh I do hope your daughter will be alright soon. Well I have a different situation and this goes with having my daughters hair cut. She's 5 and she likes her hair long but she often plays outside in the sun and she gets lice. My boys needed a haircut that day and while they were having their haircut she came along and I talked to her about it. I told her how good she'll look if she had her hair cut and she won't itch anymore from the lice. I have niece close to her age and she had short hair. I told my daughter her hair would look like that of my niece and they will look the same and I said it will be real nice. She finally agreed to have her hair cut. During the process I keep giving her the thumbs up in the mirror and she keeps blinking back at me for her agreement. She didn't want to speak while her hair was being cut. I had it cut just below her ear. Her hair used to be almost to her waist. After the hair cut I told her how good she looks and everyone in the family quite agreed. happy
