Even if you take this as allegorical, the symbolism cannot be understood unless you work in the literal first.

Personally, I think Cain was looking for an excuse. He has no way of knowing whether there were other people out there or not. Most of Cain's interaction is filled with trying to weasel out of what is going on. When he is first asked where Abel is, he knows where Abel is but tries to find an excuse out of it by claiming he doesn't know. He even claims his punishment is too great to bear. Dude just killed his brother out of jealousy...he can bear the punishment since he is being given mercy. He doesn't want to bear it, and is looking to find ways out of it. I would say he is not speaking out of his own knowledge here. Though, it could be possible that he is referring to his own family since they would be the only ones who would really know about him killing his brother.

Most use his wife as proof there were people out there beyond his family. Though, this is before the Torah is given and there is a good chance she is his sister. We know in Avraham's time that this was permissible to some degree since Sarah was his sister, even if just his half sister.

Of course, there could have been others out there but I personally do not feel it falls in line with the feeling of the story at that point.

thanks for the comments with regards to my query which i posted a day ago..you know evolution issue is still making its way through to a lot of people beyond its controversy, who wish anyway that we have come from apes or monkey? i will rather digest what the bible is saying from where we came from, anyway the bible are not all that list of scientific facts but rather faith of God, and somehow at the end of the day things that are secret will finally come to light..happy posting friend
