Roles Reversed: Would Hillary Have Offered Obama the VP Slot? email this discussion to a friend?

A lot of Democrats, and Republicans for that matter, were upset when Obama did not offer Hillary Clinton the number 2 slot as his VP running mate. I was also upset by this, especially due to how close the primaries were. It was a long and hard battle and it would only have been fair to offer it to her - even if she did refuse. I actually think she would have turned him down, but it is a matter of principle, and I still think he should have offered!

However, if the roles had been reversed and Hillary had won the nomination do you think she would have offered the number 2 slot to Obama? Why or Why Not? I like to think she would have, simply to show that she was a big enough person to do so. What do you think?

She would have picked Obama so fast his head would spin. Hillary is a political opportunist. She plays to win and there is no way she would pass up a guaranteed victory. Ok, maybe not 100% guaranteed, but honestly, there is no VP choice that McCain could have made that would offset that combo. His only possible hope at that point would have been Colin Powell who had already said he wasn't interested. Any other black American or woman as a running mate would have seemed like pandering at that point. He would have probably chosen Joe Lieberman and eventually lost.

You are probably right. That would have been an almost unstoppable ticket. And quite possibly a better one, too.

Hillary would've picked Obama in a New York minute. If we know anything about the Clintons it's that they like to win. I was proud Obama didn't pick her, it showed to me that he is more concerned about this country than he is about winning elections. But now that Palin has given McCain such a bump and the rumors are swirling that Biden may step aside and Hillary may step in, I have to say it may not be a bad idea. After all, this country needs change, and I believe in Obama, I just don't believe in the American voters to make an informed decision and vote on the issues. They seem to look at what I call the "sparkle factor", and whoever can run the dirtiest campaign wins.

Yes, I have to agree with you that she would have picked him as VP. And I have to agree that the best thing the Democratic party could do right now, what with Palin on the Republican ticket, would be to replace Biden with Hillary. Though I have my doubts at this point that it will happen. I still think that if the two could learn to work together instead of competing with each other they could make a very good team. They are similar on a number of the issues, and their differences would help to ensure that the best possible solution for America would be worked out before they implemented any plans.

I do understand, in a way, why Obama did not pick Hillary as his running mate, but I cannot help but think that it might have been in the best interest of both his shot at the Presidency and the American people if he had done so.

I'm pretty sure Hillary would have offered the post to Obama. Whether he would have accepted or not is another question. But for Obama to offer it to Hillary would have been dangerous for him. He would need a food taster for his entire term.

LOL! Good point. And I am not sure if he would have accepted it either. He would probably have been in the same position Hillary is now, gearing up for another shot at it in 2012.

I'm not quite as sure as some here are that Hillary would have chosen Obama and I'm not so sure it would have been the best idea for her to do so either. Hindsight is always 20/20 so if Obama loses in November many will believe that had he chosen Hillary as his VP the results would have been different but we'll never really know.

I've believed for a long time, in fact I've heard it said on various shows that long before the GOP's nominee was even chosen the party had already prepared all kinds of negative ads against Hillary because they'd assumed she'd be the Democratic nominee. We all know they've come up with enough about Obama to sling the mud at him. Therefore, while on paper this may look like an unbeatable team, I'm not so sure. I'm not so sure Hillary's not being chosen by Obama wasn't actually a mutual decision because there had been quite a bit of speculation about vetting Bill Clinton and the questions that may have come up concerning his foundation. I don't think he's doing anything wrong or illegal myself but I'm sure the right would have found something to pick at which would have distracted the voters from the issues at hand. She may well have been "tentatively" asked and she may have refused.

You know, I had not thought about it from that perspective, but it makes good solid sense. I had been looking at it from the angle that she was the expected winner for so very long and had such a large group of supporters that she would automatically be the logical choice for the VP slot. It had not dawned on me that the two combined would give the GOP camp double the ammo during the actual campaign!

annie, I totally had not thought of it that way! It could have very well have been a mutual decision, and I'm pretty sure the Republicans would have had a field day fousing the election on Bill instead of the real issues. Look at how it's going now, it's been anything but issues from the McCain side, it would've been much worse if they'd been given the opportunity to shine a light on Bill.

I just wanted to add that I don't mean this as any kind of attack against either Clinton, nor is it meant to "hint" that he is or was doing anything wrong but just that the right would have dug through every detail of his foundation and charity work as well as his speaking engagements to find anything possible to raise questions about and I wouldn't blame him for not wishing to go through that again.

She may have but if not I do think she would have chosen another black politician to be her VP.

That is quite possible. I had not thought about that possibility.
