What do cartoons have against mothers?

Don't forget about The Land Before Time when Littlefoot's mother dies. Unfortunately I think it has to do with kids being forced to be independent, and triumphing over adversity, or something like that. Somehow thery want you to sympathize with the character, and still feel a sense of "I can do anything."

Well, I think they do that because a father isn't really as close to a child, most of the time. there's the father and the mother, and the mother is the one who was there in the very beginning, so there's a little more emotion there, stereotypically.

It gives the children the excuse to be independent and not answer to anyone. The only way you can do that is to kill off the mom! Although why they wouldn't just make the animal run away is a mystery to me.

Well I know that Full House was not a cartoon but the same case, the mother died and the father was left to take care of the children. Well the father, the uncle, and the crazy friend but you get the point. We could go all the way back to the Andy Griffin show which just like Full House the mother was buried in episode one. Then there was Father Knows Best, so Hollywood has a long history of the single father format. Why not just have a traditional two parent household, what an idea!

My friends and I had this very discussion a couple years ago. No one can figure it out either. It's really weird. And, we all wondered what Disney had against women and mothers. Well, maybe not women as lots of cartoons are centered around women. But, mostly they are centered around little girls so, perhaps women is correct. What did we ever do to Disney to make them want to kill us all off?

Perhaps someone should write Disney and other cartoonists and ask them why mothers die in their movies all the time. LOL!

They probably know that is what would rip the kid's hearts out the most. Maybe they play on that to get the kids to root for the main character more? I don't know, but when Bambi's mom died I bawled. I mean I was little, but still. I hate watching movie where moms die, even now that I'm older and know better than to let my emotions get involved.
