Quran, if it is misquoted - would that influence your viewpoint? email this discussion to a friend?

eg Chapter 47 verse 5 reads:

'And when you meet in regular battle those who disbelieve, smite their necks; and, when you have overcome them, bind fast the fetters - then afterwards either release them as a favour or by taking ransom - until the war lays down its burdens. That is the ordinance. And if Allah had so pleased, He could have punished them Himself, but He has willed that He may try some of you by others. And those who are killed in the way of Allah - He will never render their works in vain.'

The above is a direct translation from the Arabic text and is the verse in its enitrity. Now read the same verse, quoted by people raising questions about Islam and values of its wisdom in the Quran, read the following:

'And when you meet them, swipe of their heads...and when you have slaughtered them, carefully tie them up.'

This is an example of a verse, taken out of context and falsely quoted to be the word of the Quran to paint a negative picture of Islam. Now, if someone says to you that Islam is violent and presents the above two lines to you claiming it is written in the Quran, if you did not know better, you would be inclined to believe the fabrication. Couple that with modern day terrorism, its not hard to see why western commentators, would continue on such false allegations.

Would you not agree that Islam needs to be quoted correctly as a prerequisite for debate, rather than false allegations as a basis for blind attacks on untruths? Moreover, for this very reason, it is essential that dialogue is undertaken to clear up these mistruths?

All religion is divisive and cannot be relied upon. It is rather a question of what real truth is common to all faiths.

True, but do you not think it is not the religion which is divisive, but human nature which naturally does not come together? After all, there is little difference in every individual who breathes the same air and in general has the same bodily functions.

But the question is of whether a simple truth, ie if you see a potatoe and someone insists its a tomato, you prove that it is a potato but it is still unbelieved - is this not denial of the truth? Moreover, the Quran itself, if quoted, cannot be incorrect if translated direct from the Arabic script, which has not (not even a single letter) been altered since its writing. This has been protected with great vigour and proof is in the fact that all Arabic copies are consistent with each other all over the world.

So the potatoe is a potatoe which ever way you slice it! Hence, my question, if you get a misquote of the magnitude of my example, would you not get an ill-feeling about the subject in question?

Each religion has a contrary dogma. That is why it causes so much friction especially by radical elements. I can only accept that part of a religion that is common to ALL good faiths. That is why i am spiritual but not religious.

In that case, fellow human, with respect, my example should come as a common truth to you, that misquotes can mislead - and if you say you are spiritual, you must also believe in a Creator and you must have some kind of faith.

You are very correct, and your fundamental stand is what in very simple terms is taught by most faiths over the years, but corrupted by humans. For example, to be spritual you believe in some kind of spritual existence beyond our own and envisage a Creator. Hence, over the Ages many superstituous beleifs abouts the moon, sun and universe. Religion came only as a benefit to mankind to codify the spiritual code of God. And each religion came for a period to reflect the times, but had very similar messages. Messengers carried the messages, sometimes with entirely new law, or reviving old ones.

But whether, you follow Moses, Abraham, Jesus or Muhammad, or buddhist or Hindu, you ultimately believe in God and a message from all the above was the worship of that one God. How you achieve nearness to God and get His approval, is generally codified in religions in their purity.

But man's interference has led to disunity and provacation, when the religion teaches quite the opposite. Moreover, each and everyone of us needs to put God in the forefront of spirituality rather than the religion. This is the only way that humans will be more Godly in their conduct.

I think i agree basically in what you say, although for me god and spirituality are impersonal and the same. There was no creation but only the eternal now.
