Have you ever gotten a fish bone stuck in your throat while eating? |
|
What did you do to get it out?I just finished having my lunch and today I made fried river fish with rice and vegetables. While eating the fish I got a bone stuck in my throat. I drank water hoping it will help carry the bone down my throat but it hasn't worked.

1. weiwei88 (117) | 2 months ago | I remember there's one time where the fish bone got stuck to my throat. Its like you can feel something sharp is poking your throat. Immediately i went to get a glass of water and gulp down. After a while i felt better. I guess it was just a small fish bone.

2. oyenkai (524) | 2 months ago | Swallow a spoon of (cooked duh haha) rice. Or a slice of banana c: I hope that helps. Actually we have a superstition that if you have someone (a person or an animal that was born with his/her feet first instead of his/her head) then you can ask him/her to rub your neck for a little bit then you'd feel better. It's a superstition but it worked several times for me and my mother (we had a cat that was born that way)... maybe it was mind over matter or something, but you could give it a try for yourself;)

serendib (1032) | 2 months ago | I'll try the banana. I hate when this happens but maybe if I was eating fish every day like you were, I'd be careful and be able to detect any bones I may swallow. I also have a habit of eating really fast so this could be another reason. I wish you the same, happy myLotting.

4. rosedust82 (1146) | 2 months ago | This has happened to me and it was pretty painful. The last time I had one stuck in my throat, it took me several hours to remove. I tried eating solid food, bread, rice, banana... it just wouldn't go down. Then I tried hacking it up (coughing) and it sort of loosened it and when I got something solid to eat, it went down.

serendib (1032) | 2 months ago | I agree it is painful. I'm having a banana now, so maybe it might work. I tried eating rice but it didn't help much.

5. arko006 (851) | 2 months ago | Well my friend I do have this kind of experience. And trust me it is the worst thing ever happen to me.One day I was eating Hilsa fish, and it has lots of bones you know. So,suddenly while eating,I felt a bone inside my throat,I just cant able to move it with my tongue. Then I drink some water, also then it was still in there.I was not able to breathe then,it was so horrible, that I just can't express in words. Then my mom gave me a bread, and I ate it,and after that the bone was gone, and I found some relief. After that I eat carefully.I found a article in the net about curing this disaster, just want to share with you,It says that when a fish bone stucks in the throat, then Open your mouth, press your tongue down and look in the mirror to see if you can see it, or ask a friend. It's probably better not to swallow it (depending on the size) as your doctor could get it out fast if it's still high up or go to the accidents and emergency ward of your local hospital so they can get it out straight away without it causing damage on the way down. If you think you've swallowed it, eat lots of bread or oats and drink water to make the passage easier so it doesn't scrape on the way down and so it doesn't go into the windpipe. If it scrapes on the way past you might need an anti ulcer treatment or an anti-inflammatory. This is likely if you have pain 4-5 days after the fishbone. Do NOT panic, it doesn't help anything and seek medical advice if you have pain and especially if you have trouble breathing (which can also be due to panic so try not to worry) If the hospital can't see it and you still feel something (note: this could just be an ulcer or a scar) they might do a fibroscope test (tube through nose going half way down the throat) to reassure you. If the pain is lower down say so, as this is the domain of the gastro-enterologist who would also put tubing down that goes lower, but this is in the worst cases. Above all, do not eat your fish in the same mouthful as other foods and chew it slowly. Or avoid fish with bones, try scallops:)

serendib (1032) | 2 months ago | I'm at the moment trying the banana remedy. If the banana doesn't work I'll go out and get some bread and see if it will work. You're right, it really is a horrible experience when this happens. The article is quite interesting. I hope I don't have pain for 4-5 days. I think the reason this happened was because I was eating really fast and not being careful.

6. mentalward (2290) | 2 months ago | If it is a small enough bone, eat a piece of bread. This advice was given to a friend of mine whose throat was swollen due to a a tooth she had just had pulled that day. She developed an infection and was given antibiotics. The first one she tried to swallow got stuck in her throat. The doctor told her to eat a small piece of bread immediately and wash it down with a large gulp of water. It worked. But, if it's a large bone, you're going to want to have it removed by your doctor, or in the emergency room at a hospital. If you swallow it, it could still damage your stomach or intestines by poking through the side. Sometimes, though, it can feel as though there's something stuck in our throats even if it has gone down into our stomachs because, if it scrapes the side of the esophagus, it can irritate it enough to feel like it's still there. This feeling can sometimes go on for a couple of days! If you can't see the bone by looking into your throat with a flashlight and can't swallow it by eating bread or something, you'd better see a doctor immediately to have it removed. They have stuff that can numb your throat while they remove foreign objects so you won't feel a thing. Don't put it off! It's important that you do something as soon as possible! Good luck to you.

serendib (1032) | 2 months ago | I think the banana is working. I can feel the bone going down a little everytime I take a bite of the banana. I wish I had known about the bread because I just ate 3 1/2 bananas and I feel a little sick. I don't think it's that serious that I need to go to the doctor. But if the banana doesn't work I'll eat some bread. If the bread doesn't help, I'll go to the doctor.

mentalward (2290) | 2 months ago | I'm glad to hear that the bone is moving, but it sure sounds like it's a relatively large fish bone if it hasn't gone down all the way after 3 1/2 bananas! I wish you the best and hope the bread works. If you do get the bone down into your stomach, you should eat a lot more of anything to surround the bone and help it to move through your digestive system easier. If you manage to get it into your stomach, please stay alert to any sharp pains in your abdomen! It sure does sound like a large bone and it can cause problems along the way. Keep us updated, okay? I'll be concerned about it until I hear from you that everything is fine.

serendib (1032) | 2 months ago | After almost 5 1/2 hours of suffering and by eating almost 4 bananas, the bone is no longer there. I sure wish I tried the bread though. But I'll use it the next time something like this happens again to me or my family or any else I know. It really was a painful and a very uncomfotable experience. I don't feel any pain in my stomach though. I'm going to be extra careful when I eat fish that has bones in it from now on. I don't ever want to have such an experience again.

mentalward (2290) | 2 months ago | I'm so glad it's out of your throat, or esophagus! But, still, over the next 24 hours or so you should keep an eye out for any sharp pain anywhere from your stomach to the end of your intestines. Also, drink plenty of water over the next 24 hours. Bread is better than bananas for something like this because bananas are so slippery that they can pass right over whatever is stuck. That's why bread is a good choice. It's as solid as you can get without being so solid that it might get stuck in your esophagus along with whatever it is that you're trying to dislodge. Drink enough liquid with it and it will dissolve into tiny bits whereas something like meat or vegetables won't. I'm glad to hear the good news, though. I hope it's like every other problem that comes our way, "This too shall pass." LOL Take care!

serendib (1032) | 2 months ago | Thanks Mentalward. It was a horrible experience and one that I hope I don't have again. But if I do I will definitely have bread.

| 8. teresita_tranquilino (58) | 2 months ago | My grandmother always told me if i got a bone stuck in my throat ill eat a banana. But you dont have to chew it, just take a bite then swallow it and drink water but if the bone is a little hard and you cant get it out even when you eat a banana and if you spit out theres blood better to go to the doctor so he can pick it up.

| |
|
|
serendib (1032) | 2 months ago | Well your grandmother is right, bananas do work. Because of the bananas I ate, I no longer have the bone stuck to my throat. I think the reason why I had to eat a couple of them is because I didn't swallow them on each bite, instead I was chewing it. I was too scared to swallow as soon as I took a bite because it hurt too much.

9. mimico (2546) | 2 months ago | This happened to me before when I was younger. I just swallowed a lot of water until the fish bone went down my throat. Sometimes, eating a banana helps as well. Now that I'm older I'm more patient and meticulous when it comes to eating fish. I also try to get the boneless version if available.:)

serendib (1032) | 2 months ago | Hi Jakesun, I got rid of the bone after consuming almost 5 bananas. You're the second person on this discussion who suggested vinegar. It seems this was one of the traditonal ways that some people used to remove a fish bone. You can read more about it in the article at the following link. https://www.hsbc.com.hk/1/2/hk/insurance/healthnet/archive/faq0609-1
