A Memory about 7th Grade |
|
When I was a student in the 7th grade, there was a dress code that we had to abide by. Girls had to wear dresses or skirts. Living in New England the temperatures in the winter months can be quite cold and back when I was a teen, it was cold. My legs were frozen from exposure to the cold winds and temperatures. When they changed the dress code for girls allowing them to wear pants, as long as it wasn't jeans, I was thrilled and so was every girl in that school. I only had 2 pair of pants to my name and they were both blue jeans. My aunt let me borrow a pair of hers. Every girl in the school wore pants that next day. My legs were warm! All was right with the world.

hopefoo (710) | 2 years ago | Funny. When I was younger I hated dresses. I hated jeans cause they were so rough on my skin. I loved my Fido Dido shorts. I loved Fido Dido. I have them in all kinds of colours and I'd come back from school, change to shorts and a tee and go all out. I was very good at climbing trees, jumping over hedges..the lot of it. If I were a red indian, my name would be.. Little Savage. LOL

2. GardenGerty (14049) | 2 years ago | I will add my memories to yours.I was from a semi-affluent suburb of Oklahoma City. We had to all go outside after lunch for a period of time, probably only ten to fifteen minutes, but the "popular" girls and the in group made fun of anyone who wore heavy tights (we called them leotards) because that was little girl clothes. Same for socks. I was very shocked by a girl who moved in who had grown up in Pennsylvania--she wore socks. I admired her ability to do the practical, and not try to please the crowd. We did not get released to wear slacks and pantsuits until my senior year in high school. I came to a conservative Kansas town for college, and the girls had been wearing jeans to school for years in the winters. On campus, it still had to be slacks not jeans, but that was okay by me.

3. margieanneart (16923) | 2 years ago | When I was in 7th grade, there was no dress code. We just had to make sure that our dresses were not one inch above our knees. It was warm where I grew up, so I never had to worry about cold legs.

4. TiareF (179) | 2 years ago | Here ya go. I hear about this one all the time from my mom. I was in Kindergarten and she had gotten me all of these cute little dresses. She even made some of them and they really were pretty. After the 1st week of school my teacher sent a note home and asked my mom to please save the dresses for church because I was climbing trees in my pretty little dresses and she didn't want me to ruin them. LOL What they didn't know it was all the fault of the boys in the class they said they could climb higher than me and that wasn't about to happen. I wasn't afraid of heights back then and could shimmie a tree like a monkey. Too bad I can't do that anymore. LOL

5. AskAlly (2999) | 2 years ago | We had to wear skirts for awhile as well. But it gets to -40c and wind chill factors -60c. School usually closed then but at -38c we all had snowpants under our skirts that we had to take off in the girls change room before we were allowed to go to class. What a stupid rule!

ElusiveButterfly (8494) | 2 years ago | I was just thinking about that too. We could wear the pants to school but had to wear them under our dress or skirt and take them off in the bathroom and leave them in our locker. Yes, I agree, it was a stupid rule.

6. mimatexas (1221) | 2 years ago | I have bad memories from my 7th grade. My brother drown in the Rio Grande river in that year and he was going in the same grade with me, I missed him very much because he would accompany me to school. We had a savings account together and a week before he said to split the savings and wasted all the money like if he knew he was going to die.

7. samtaylorskykierajen (5914) | 2 years ago | I am glad we didn't have anything like that when we were in school . I would have been sick all the time . I wasn't allowed to get cold at all or it would make me really sick and I would end up with the croup . I also wouldn't have done well in a dress code where we had to wear dresses as I never wore a dress to school ever .

8. lonewolfnan (2844) | 2 years ago | It is amazing to me how some rules are so silly! For years the girls had to wear clothes that would be very uncomfortable and possibly dangerous to their health!?!Did the rule makers figure females did not feel the cold? Was this also when female teachers had to wear skirts and male teachers had to wear a tie??Isn't it time to make rules that are fair to both sexes??How can we expect equal rights as adults when it is being burnt into us at a very young age that we are treating people differently?

9. brokentia (7831) | 2 years ago | Wow! I can't imagine a school making girls wear skirts and dresses all the time. That is just sad! But I also know that we have come a long way in a short time in society. Which...is a good thing. Because i would have been lost growing up! I didn't have a single dress in grade school. Matter of fact...I don't think I had a dress until I moved in with my mother at 8th grade! LOL

10. getnbuy (760) | 2 years ago | I had to wear dresses or skirts through all my school years. What a silly rule! At least I lived in California, so I didnt freeze. If they wanted us to be modest they should have let us wear pants. I rmember having to line up sitting on the floor with our knees up for bomb drills and knowing my underpants were showing. yuck!
