How important is a high school diploma to you? |
|
Don't you feel your job opportunities are better with an education? My 20-year-old neice who dropped out of high school is now working in a daycare making $8./hour. She's been there less than 6 months and is already complaining she wants more money. I tend to think her earning level will reach a wall where it will not go any higher simply because she does not have any education. Tell me how far you've gone without a high school diploma and if you agree that she needs some kind of specialized training to obtain a good paying job. What kind of advice would you give her? She has no desire to go to school and get her GED.

Education is very important in many aspects of life including employment. She will have to come to the desire for a better education on her own. Eventually, she will desire an education.

2. DJ9020 (985) | 2 years ago | My daughter dropped out and got her GED. She currently has a decent job, but she will never have more than just enough to get by at this point. Instead of going back to high school, I have encouraged her to take at least one class at a junior college, or even on line. The point is that when she does go to look for another job, all a possible employer will see at first is the paper application. It makes a big difference when they look at High School diploma/ No, GED, HS diploma, or some college. I told my daughter that if I was hiring, the person with the HS diploma will get a call back before the one with the GED, and the one with Military experience or some college before the HS diploma, and so on.

3. kbkbooks (2231) | 2 years ago | My stepson is 17 and will be 18 in a few weeks. He has dropped out of school this year when he was supposed to graduate. He watches TV and eats and sits at the computer. I have actual paying work online and he keeps me from doing it. We have done everything to try and get him off this kick. He won't work. He won't even go outside most of the time. He isn't depressed, just ultimately lazy. We have tried being angry, mean, polite, gentle, nothing works.

4. TeresaK (8091) | 2 years ago | Unfortunately, if she has no desire for further education, there's not much point in trying to convince her that it would be to her benefit. I've worked in an adult education program before, and those who are there because they were sent by the court or the welfare system just do NOT put the effort in that you see from those who are there because they truly want to make a better life for themselves and their families. Hopefully your niece will see the light soon!

5. awonderfullife (2348) | 2 years ago | In my opinion a high school diploma is the bare minumum. Even for kids who don't thrive well in a regular high school enviromnment, there is always the option of a technical school. Something! But really, in this day you really need a college degree to get a decent paying job. I used to work in an HR department and there is no way we would have hired someone without at least a high school diploma. I would tell your niece she is really limiting herself.

6. lpetges (2329) | 2 years ago | not only these days do you need a diploma from high school, you almost need a college degree. its hard enough to find a job out there once you get a bacheors degree in something, let alone no high school diploma..years ago many people dropped out because you could, now days that is not so cool anymore and there is less of it. try and convince her to get her ged, if she wants to get anywhere in life you really should have that backing you!

7. byfaithonly (5702) | 2 years ago | I think that education, further than high school, is very important if you want to "make more money". There are the rare times such as my oldest, he dropped out of school at 16 and has a high paying job with nice house, 2 new vehicles, boats, vacations (3 kids) but he's 31 and has the body of an 80 year old because he did manual labor for most of his adult life (construction). GO TO SCHOOL!

perrytx (1919) | 2 years ago | I told her there are exceptions. Those manuel labor jobs that pay well but beat you up physcially very quickly. Her boyfriend is one of those who is doing well in a manuel labor job. I know she doesn't want to do manuel labor, though!

9. abhiquest (572) | 2 years ago | I think a person should really think of education as an investment and should try to compliment his/her skills with proper education. It does require some time and a level of interest and also once a person grows and liabilities come in the way, its difficult to concentrate, but still higher education does add value to your career and earning.
