FDA orders Texas plant to shut down, recall smoked seafood email this discussion to a friend?

WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal health authorities are directing a Pasadena, Texas, company to shut down and recall all its dried smoked catfish steaks and other smoked seafood produced since June 2007 because it failed to develop safety standards, leading to a risk of bacteria contamination in its products. There have been no reported illnesses, according to Food and Drug Administration spokeswoman Stephanie Kwisnek.

Hope Food Supply Inc.'s products were distributed nationwide. The FDA this week directed the company to close until it has implemented the right plan to identify all food safety hazards and preventive measures to control risks. Hope Food Supply declined to comment when reached by telephone.

For more information, consumers can call the FDA at 888-723-3366. To report adverse reactions or other problems, visit http://www.fda.gov/opacom/backgrounders/complain.html.

-Medicis has announced it is recalling the antibiotic Solodyn (lot numbers B08037 and B080038, both expiring 12/09) extended release tablets 90 milligrams, 30-count bottles. The company has learned that one bottle contains Azasin (azathioprine) tablets used in kidney transplant patients to prevent rejection and for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Taking Azasan instead of Solodyn can present a safety risk to patients. Side effects associated with the use of Azasan, particularly in the elderly, include bleeding, chills, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Anyone with questions about the recall should call 1-888-656-6381 from Monday through Friday. Those with medical questions or those who want to report an adverse event should call Medicis at 1-800-900-6389.
